Strike continues as fissures appear in lawyers' unity

Disregarding elders' committee's verdict, the advocates continued to abstain from judicial work on Tuesday. The decision to continue strike has led to discontentment among the men-in-black. The district judge, Kanpur Nagar, summoned the office-bearers of Kanpur Bar Association and The Lawyers' Association, members of Elders' committee and newly-elected president and general secretary of KBA and told them that the courts should soon start functioning.Later, an office-bearer said that the district judge made it clear that the judiciary had its limit. Meanwhile, the agitating advocates sent a memorandum to chief minister Akhilesh Yadav demanding that the remaining killers of lawyer Prashant Kumar Dwivedi be arrested at the earliest. They also demanded a compensation of Rs 25 lakh to Dwivedi's kin and firearms licence to advocates. On Monday evening, the Elders' committee had termed the strike as illegal. This has led to the belief that the strike would be called off on Tuesday. However, in-charge office-bearers of the KBA and other lawyers refused to obey Elders' committee order. A few young advocates also used foul language against Elders' committee alleging that a few senior advocates were misleading the advocates. They also announced that strike would continue till their demands were met. Led by lawyer Bhanu Pratap Dwivedi they also staged a fast at Shatabdi Gate. Many lawyers who had reached the court believing that strike would be called off were disappointed. They were found discussing the situation in small groups in their chambers. Many believed that the strike should be called off as the police had already arrested two main accused. They termed the demand for compensation as illegal. The Elders' committee meanwhile stated that they would give the charge to newly elected executive committee on May 2 and thereafter the newly-elected office-bearers would decide the course of action. Elders' Committee was not in favour of strike.Apart from all these activities, Allahabad High Court verdict wherein the court had said that the Bar Council had no right to give a call for strike was also a point of discussion among the advocates. On Wednesday, the advocates would stage a march from Kanpur court to Phoolbagh to lodge their protest against the slow investigation in advocate murder case and press for their demand of compensation.
