Coronavirus pandemic has caused a 'hidden backlog' of FIVE MILLION patients needing NHS treatment, report reveals

The pandemic has caused a ‘hidden backlog’ of almost 5million people needing NHS treatment, a report has revealed. Referrals for routine hospital care plummeted by a third between January and August. There were 4.7million fewer people referred for treatment – such as hip, knee and cataract surgery – compared to the same period the year before, the Health Foundation revealed. The think-tank warned that long waits could now ‘become the norm for millions of people’ unless action was taken to protect non-Covid care. Labor's civil war: How one furious MP could spell the end of Anthony Albanese's election hopes after an explosive row in a meeting on climate policy - as he warned the party will NEVER get into power

Rumours are swirling that Joel Fitzgibbon is plotting to bring down Anthony Albanese's leadership of the Labor Party after he dramatically quit the frontbench on Tuesday. The 58-year-old MP for the New South Wales coal-mining seat of Hunter stepped down as shadow agriculture and resources minister amid an ongoing disagreement over climate and energy policy. Mr Fitzgibbon, a strong supporter of the gas and coal industries, believes Labor is out of touch with blue-collar workers and needs a more moderate position on climate change to make the party electable again. Several Labor politicians said he and Mr Albanese had an explosive argument at a shadow cabinet meeting on Monday night, which was described by one frontbencher as 'the worst I've ever seen'. UK says YES to jab... but you go first, Boris! Poll shows three-quarters of Britons would agree to have the Covid-19 vaccine - but 40% want politicians to take it first to prove it's safe

Three in four Britons would take the Covid vaccine, including nearly nine in ten elderly, according to a Daily Mail poll. Only 7 per cent said they would not have it under any circumstances. The poll also showed that Pfizer’s breakthrough jab was the best news of the year for many – and as significant as the fall of the Iron Curtain. However there was a note of caution, with seven in ten feeling lockdown restrictions should stay in place for now. Four in ten said the Prime Minister and fellow politicians should take the vaccination first to show it was safe. The poll came as Matt Hancock unveiled details of the ‘mammoth logistical operation’ required to inoculate huge swathes of the population within weeks. The Health Secretary said the roll-out would ‘inject hope into millions of arms this winter’. The programme will include GPs offering jabs from 8am to 8pm seven days a week and: In a poll conducted by the Daily Mail, nearly nine in ten elderly people said they would take the Covid v

Judge rules Jehovah's Witness, 15, must have blood transfusion to save her life in emotive case echoing Emma Thompson's movie court dilemma

A teenage Jehovah's Witness must have a blood transfusion to save her life despite her religious objections, a senior judge ruled today. The High Court heard doctors must go ahead with the procedure because, although the 15-year-old is intelligent and able to make her own decisions, she should not be allowed to die. But Sir James Munby said his ruling had been made in great haste because of the girl's condition and that she may be able to refuse transfusions in the future. Sir James Munby, pictured above, said his ruling had been made in great haste because of the girl's condition He called for judges to reconsider legal precedents set down nearly 30 years ago which say that children should have no say in whether they accept medical treatment they do not want. The case mirrors the dilemmas faced by the family court judge played by Emma Thompson in 2017's The Children Act. In the film, based on the novel by Ian McEwan, the judge orders that a 17-year-old Jehovah's Wi

50 Tory MPs join new anti-lockdown group to fight against any Government plan to extend anti-Covid restrictions past December 2

Fifty Tory MPs have joined a new anti-lockdown group vowing to fight against any new coronavirus lockdown, according to reports. The 'Covid Recovery Group' will aim to fight against any Government plan to extend current coronavirus lockdown restrictions after the beginning of next month. England is currently in a second national lockdown until December 2 - with pubs and bars closed and all but essential travel banned.  Boris Johnson has vowed that the restrictions will be lifted and replaced with regional measures on December 2. I saw the bruises Sean Connery left on his wife's face: Since his death, Sean Connery has rightly been praised for his screen roles. But now a close friend of his first wife Diane Cilento, reveals a violent streak that would have made 007 wince

Less than a fortnight ago, Sir Sean Connery died in his sleep, aged 90, and those who paid lavish tribute to the screen’s first and greatest James Bond have seemed determined to confer heroic status on him. Scotland’s First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, said she was ‘heartbroken’ to hear of his death, adding: ‘Our nation is today mourning one of our best-loved sons.’ Dame Shirley Bassey, who sang the Goldfinger and Diamonds Are Forever theme songs, said: ‘He was a wonderful person, a true gentleman, and will be forever in our hearts.’ ‘He was the hero of our times,’ agreed actor Andy Garcia, his co-star in The Untouchables, for which Connery won his only Oscar. But how true is that assertion? The women of the #MeToo movement would not regard Connery as a hero at all.
