Sad times: Fan-favourite Marc, 51, was eliminated from The Great British Bake Off on Tuesday night, after his Dessert Week creations missed the mark

Leicester-born Marc decided to enter Bake Off in a bid to show his daughters that even when life throws obstacles at you, you can rise to new challenges and develop new passions.

The support worker, who lost his leg in a motorbike accident in 2016, failed to impress the judges with his quarter-final offerings.

Although Marc was sent home, Paul Hollywood admitted that he'd gone on the biggest journey of them all and that it was a 'shame to see him go.'

Paul confessed that it was a 'shame' to lose Marc after he got 'better and better' each week during the competition.

Personal tragedy, including losing his leg in a motorbike accident in 2016, led him to baking bread as a form of therapy, and from there he came to baking cakes and pastries.

During Tuesday's quarter-final, bakers were first given two and a half hours to make 12 identical baked mini cheesecakes, with a baked fillings and a face made from scratch.

Peter held his hope out on taste, after his 'Lime and Ginger 'cheesecakes curd didn't go to plan, which saved him from being completely torn apart by the judges.

Laura's 'Passion Fruit' cheesecakes were a disaster after they didn't set and she struggled because they were still warm when she attempted to decorate them - but Paul and Prue were bowled over by their taste

David's 'Celebration of Citrus' cheesecake with lemon and orange flavours punching through were incredibly neat.

Hermine 'Passion Fruit' cheesecakes with a cinnamon biscuit base looked gorgeous but Paul and Prue weren't fans of their taste or texture.

Marc's New York Style Vanilla and Mascarpone Cheesecake didn't go down well with the judges, on every aspect.

Their technical challenge - to create a Sussex Pond Pudding - saw all five contestants struggle, with none applauded for their efforts.

For their showstoppers, the bakers were tasked with presenting jelly filled, visually spectacular creations which should include a baked sponge.

Laura's created a 'Flower Power' koi jelly art cake was praised by the judges for design and taste.

Paul criticised Dave's Newquay Beach Scene for being too stodgy and dry due to too much gelatin.

Peter's Snow Globe Jelly Cake didn't go down as well as he'd hoped, because it had 'only just set.'

Marc opted for apple jelly with chocolate and strawberry mousse ended up curdled, while the base was overdone 'like concrete' according to Paul.

Hermine's Chocolate and Raspberry Mousse Jelly Cake was met with awe by the judges and ultimately she was crowned Star Baker
