Macron to Lebanese leaders: reform swiftly or face consequences

BEIRUT/PARIS - French President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday gave Lebanese politicians until the end of October to start delivering on reforms, saying financial aid would be withheld and sanctions imposed further down the line if corruption gets in the way. Macron told a news conference in Beirut that political leaders had agreed to form a government of experts in the next two weeks to help chart a new course for the Middle East nation collapsing under the weight of an economic meltdown. “There is no blank cheque given to Lebanon, this is a demand with an appointment in six to eight weeks,” Macron said in his second visit in less than a month to press for action to tackle a financial crisis rooted in corruption and mismanagement. “If your political class fails, then we will not come to Lebanon’s aid,” he added. Macron said targeted sanctions could be imposed in case of proven corruption and would be coordinated with the European Union, but that this was not on the agenda for October be

U.S. CDC issues temporary halt on residential evictions to combat virus

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Tuesday issued a sweeping nationwide order temporarily halting millions of U.S. renters from being evicted, in a bid to reduce the spread of COVID-19. The order covers all 43 million U.S. residential renters as long as they meet income eligibility requirements, although an administration official said the government does not expect an “overwhelming” use of the program. The order lasts through Dec. 31 and applies to individual renters who do not expect to earn more than $99,000 this year or $198,000 for joint filers. It also applies to renters who did not report income in 2019 or received a stimulus check earlier this year. Renters must file sworn declarations warning eviction would leave them homeless or force them into a “shared living setting because the individual has no other available housing options” and attest they have “used best efforts to obtain all available government assistance for rent or housing.” The a

Neo-Nazi, 17, 'wanted gun to kick-start a race war' after he 'became obsessed with twisted ideology of white supremacists'

A teenager obsessed with the 'twisted ideology' of Nazis and white supremacists researched how to convert imitation firearms into live weapons in preparation for a terror attack, a court heard. The boy, now 17 – who cannot be named – considered extremists who carried out mass shootings to be 'saints', jurors were told.  He is said to have been a member of the neo-Nazi organisation the Feuerkrieg Division and to have used extreme Right-wing online forums to share information on weapon-making. The trial was opened at Birmingham Crown Court yesterday. Mr Brook said the boy had become radicalised so he 'fully believed in extreme Right-wing ideology, the twisted ideology of Nazis and white supremacy' Matthew Brook, prosecuting, said the teenager, from Rugby, Warwickshire, had an interest in mass shootings and planned to buy a blank firing gun and convert it for live ammunition to provoke an impending 'race war'. The trial was opened at Birmingham Crown Court

New York City delays school start in deal with unions over coronavirus concerns

NEW YORK - New York City’s public school system, the country’s largest, reached an agreement on Tuesday that resolves union leaders’ coronavirus safety concerns and pushes back the opening of classrooms for the new academic year by 11 days to Sept. 21. The agreement, which comes as school systems across the country wrestle with the pandemic and pressure from the Trump administration to reopen school buildings, would maintain the city’s plan for a mix of in-class and remote learning. “What we’ve agreed to is to make sure that the health measures are in place, to make sure there is time for the appropriate preparation for our educators,” New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said at a briefing. In Los Angeles and Chicago, the country’s second and third largest school systems, students are beginning the academic year solely with online instruction. Daily U.S. coronavirus infections have been declining, with 36,263 on Monday, less than half the peak reported in mid-July, according to a Reuters ta

SEBASTIAN SHAKESPEARE: Even a Duke's heir has to cut wedding guest list for coronavirus!

Love-struck couples across the land have opted to delay their nuptials in 2020, hoping that the ‘old normal’ will return next year. But no such hesitancy has afflicted the Marquess of Worcester, 31, and his fiancée, Lucy Yorke-Long, 34, who, I can disclose, took the plunge at the weekend. It helped, of course, that they had the perfect venue at their disposal — Badminton House, the sumptuous Gloucestershire family seat inherited by Bobby Worcester’s father, ‘Bunter’, when he succeeded as the 12th Duke of Beaufort following his own father’s death in 2017. The couple, who got engaged last October, were obliged to trim back their guest list to just the closest members of their families and a handful of friends — even though Badminton boasts 40 bedrooms. Bayer appeals $20.5 million Roundup ruling to California Supreme Court

- Bayer AG has asked California’s Supreme Court to review a decision awarding $20.5 million to a groundskeeper who claimed the company’s Roundup weedkiller caused his cancer, arguing the ruling was at odds with federal law and settled legal principles. Bayer, which acquired Roundup with its purchase of Monsanto for $63 billion in 2018, said the July decision by the California Court of Appeal affirming a 2018 jury verdict in favor of Dewayne Johnson would be relied upon by other courts handling cases over the widely used herbicide. A San Francisco jury initially awarded Johnson $289.2 million after finding the chemical glyphosate in Roundup caused his non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The trial judge reduced that amount to $78.5 million and the Court of Appeal reduced that to $20.5 million. “In this case, the Court of Appeal affirmed a verdict that severely punishes Monsanto for complying with federal law,” said the petition by the company, which has long said regulators have deemed glyphosate

Sir Philip Green's £100m superyacht is confined to port in Monaco with his wife on board after two of the crew tested positive for Covid

Sir Philip and Lady Tina Green at a gallery on Cork Street, London Sir Philip Green's £100 million superyacht has been quarantined in Monaco with his wife on board. Two crewmen on the 300ft Lionheart have tested positive and its yellow flag has been flying in Port Hercules to signify the vessel bears the contagion. Lady Tina Green, 71, told The Sun that she was on board the luxury boat, but did not reveal whether Sir Philip or their 29-year-old daughter Chloe were with her. 'After maintenance in Italy, the boat returned to Monaco. We were meant to go on a cruise with my family,' Lady Tina said. 'It was my responsibility to have the whole crew tested before leaving. We then discovered two cases - one asymptomatic and the other with a sore throat. 'The two have been confined to the cabin ever since. The rest and myself are on the boat. Everyone is well.' Topshop boss Sir Philip – who furloughed 14,500 staff in April – was last spotted lounging on the yacht three w

Restrictions keep lenders, borrowers from Main Street Lending Program

NEW YORK - Restrictions within the US government’s coronavirus aid Main Street Lending Program are staving off borrowers and lenders alike even as new lending activity begins to pick up in the middle market. So far, just US$252m across 32 loans were committed or settled under the program, with a further US$604m in 55 loans under review, according to figures published on August 12 by the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, the organization managing the program. It is just a fraction of the overall US$600bn in available funds, which has raised questions from lawmakers about the viability of a program designed to provide immediate help to companies hit by the economic shutdown. Restrictions on loan ownership embedded in the program is the main hurdles for lenders, according to some bank lenders. Banks underwrite the deals and the US government holds 95% of the individual loans made under the plan. The loans are either senior to or pari passu with a companies’ existing debt, and benefit fro

Pregnant women who catch Covid-19 are HALF as likely to have symptoms but at greater risk of needing intensive care, international studies find

Pregnant women are less likely to show symptoms of Covid-19 but more likely to end up in intensive care than women who aren't expecting, a study has found. How the coronavirus affects pregnant women has been unclear throughout the worst of the pandemic and they were put onto the shielding list as a precaution. While some research has found they don't seem to be at any extra risk, a study published today finds they are more likely to get severely ill if they do get symptoms. The paper reviewed 77 other studies that have been done around the world and found that pregnant women were 57 per cent less likely to show signs of illness. Among those who did develop symptoms, however, the chance of being admitted to intensive care was 62 per cent higher than it was for other women. All the women in the study were already in hospital, so they may have had other health problems. This does not mean that 62 per cent of pregnant women with Covid-19 went into intensive care, but was a proporti

Facebook says Russian influence campaign targeted left-wing voters in U.S., UK

LONDON - A Russian influence operation posed as an independent news outlet to target left-wing voters in the United States and Britain, including by recruiting freelance journalists to write about domestic politics, Facebook said on Tuesday. Facebook Inc ( FB.O ) said the operation - which partly focused on U.S. politics and racial tensions in the run-up to the Nov. 3 presidential election - centred around a pseudo media organisation called Peace Data. The website operated 13 Facebook accounts and two pages, which were set up in May and suspended on Monday for using fake identities and other forms of “coordinated inauthentic behaviour,” the company said. Facebook said its investigation “found links to individuals associated with past activity by the Russian Internet Research Agency”, a St Petersburg-based company which U.S. intelligence officials say was central to Russian efforts to sway the 2016 presidential election. Twitter said it had also suspended five accounts as part of the

Scott Morrison's plans to double the cost of arts degrees to $14,500 a year while slashing the price of maths and engineering qualifications face a huge setback

The future of the Morrison government's university fee changes is uncertain after a vote in the Senate showed a lack of majority support for the idea. The draft legislation, which also reduces the price of 'job-relevant' courses, was introduced to federal parliament last week and is being debated in the lower house. While a Greens bid to have the bill referred to a committee for an inquiry failed in the Senate because of an even vote, if senators vote the same way for the draft laws they would fail. The future of the Morrison government's university fee changes is uncertain after a vote in the Senate showed a lack of majority support for the idea Cross bench senators Jacqui Lambie, Rex Patrick and Stirling Griff sided with the Greens and Labor, leaving the committee vote tied. Labor's education spokeswoman Tanya Plibersek says the government is hiding from scrutiny by voting against an inquiry into the bill. 'Whenever there are tough questions to answer, the Lib
