An Aston Villa apprentice football who followed a lone woman off a bus for over half a mile before raping her behind Villa Park football ground has been jailed for 10 years and six months.  Khadim Drame, who was called a 'promising young footballer', told the 45-year-old victim she was 'pretty and sexy' after following her from the bus stop in Aston Lane, Birmingham Crown Court heard. When she rejected his advances, the then 18-year-old 'waved a bundle of cash' at her before raping her in a grassy area on Witton Lane behind Villa Park, the home of Aston Villa FC. Drame, of Aston, also threatened to kill her if she pulled up her trousers during the petrifying ordeal on March 15 last year.  The rapist, now 20, initially denied a charge of rape but changed his plea to guilty on the second day of the trial after CCTV was played to the jury. He was yesterday sentenced to 10 years and six months in a young offenders' institute at Birmingham Crown Court as the judg

The suspect who allegedly shot dead an Indiana police officer reportedly threw a Molotov cocktail at the FBI building where the cop worked in the moments before the deadly shooting, federal authorities said on Thursday. Shane Meehan, 44, has been charged with the murder of a federal agent and faces up to life in prison if convicted for the slaying of Greg Ferency - a detective with the Terre Haute Police Department, federal prosecutors said in a press release. Meehan allegedly drove his pickup truck to the gate of the FBI Resident Agency building - where he got out and allegedly tossed a Molotov cocktail toward the building, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Indiana. When Detective Ferency, a 30-year veteran with the Terre Haute Police Department, soon walked out of the building, Meehan allegedly confronted him armed with a gun and shot him. 'Detective Ferency was able to return fire to defend himself but later died,' the press release rea

Flat £273 fee for probate to avert a £6k 'death tax': Plan for a levy that would hit grieving families with huge bills gets replaced with proposals for flat payment

Image
Plans for a ‘death tax’ that would have hit grieving families with bills of up to £6,000 have been replaced with proposals for a flat fee. Probate charges for individual executors will increase from current fees of £215 to £273, a 27 per cent jump. Professional users of the probate system, such as solicitors, will see fees rise 76 per cent from £155 to the new flat rate. It comes after the Government dropped controversial plans that would have seen 280,000 families a year pay on a ‘sliding scale’ tied to the value of the deceased’s estate. Probate charges for individual executors will increase from current fees of £215 to £273, a 27 per cent jump File The Daily Mail highlighted at the time how it would have left 56,000 families facing bills of £2,500 to £6,000 to secure probate – the term given to the legal right to a dead person’s property, money and possessions.  Estates valued at £5,000 or less will continue to be exempt from the new fee, due to be introduced early next year. Wealthy Florida couple sues 'woke' $22,000-a-year Catholic school to rescind $1.35 million donation pledge because it teaches LGBTQ issues

A wealthy Florida couple has filed a lawsuit demanding that the Catholic school their daughters attend return their $240,000 donation and reimburse their younger daughter's tuition for teaching 'woke' LGBTQ curriculum. Anthony and Barbara Scarpo pledged to donate $1.35 million to the Academy of the Holy Names in Tampa, Florida at a fundraising event in 2017.  They had asked that the money be used toward the school's 'master plan' and for scholarships for disadvantaged students, according to the Tampa Bay Times. By 2018, they had already paid $240,000 towards their pledge and have raised more than $9 million for the school. For their efforts, the school renamed its auditorium the Scarpo Family Theater and named the two philanthropists co-chairs of the school's fundraising campaign. But the wealthy couple, who own a diamond and jewelry import company as well as the First Trust Funding Group, have filed a lawsuit demanding that their pledge be rescinded and the

Health officials in New South Wales have made a subtle change to public health orders overnight to make it illegal for more than one person to visit another household. Premier Gladys Berejiklian on Thursday urged Sydneysiders to limit trips for care or compassionate reasons to one person as the city's spiralling Covid-19 outbreak reached 395 cases overnight.   Greater Sydney is approaching a third week of lockdown which has been extended until at least July 16 as health authorities struggle to contain the virus. NSW Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant and other officials spent Thursday night amending the public health order to make it illegal for more than one person to visit another household to give 'care or assistance', The Daily Telegraph reported. More than 85,000 people a day are getting told to isolate by the NHS, latest figures show. The number of ‘pings’ sent out by the NHS Covid-19 app has soared by 62 per cent in a week. Some 356,036 app alerts instructing people to isolate were sent out in the week ending June 30, according to NHS data – the highest weekly figure since the data was first published in January. Hospital chiefs have warned that the strict isolation rules are causing carnage as thousands of doctors and nurses are getting pinged and ordered to stay at home On top of this, another 241,499 were contacted via phone by official ‘contact tracers’ working for NHS Test and Trace. Since June 30, weekly cases have soared by 43 per cent, meaning the number isolating in the past week is likely to have been significantly higher. The increasing figures suggest half a million people a day could be getting told to isolate by Freedom Day on July 19, when daily infections are likely to top 100,000.  Hospital chiefs have warned

Civil rights leaders said they informed President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris activists would be 'getting back into the streets' as voting rights legislation has stalled on Capitol Hill.    'This will be a summer of activism. A summer of getting back into the streets. A summer of saying to the Senate and the Congress you may be going home, but it's going to be warmer politically than you think on the ground. We want that to be made clear,' the Rev. Al Sharpton told reporters after a White Housemeeting with Biden and Harris Thursday that lasted about an hour and 40 minutes.   When the Senate returns next week, civil rights leaders said lawmakers should be prepared to face down activists, after all 50 Senate Republicans voted last month against opening debate on the For the People Act.   (From left, front row) Melanie Campbell of the National Coalition for Black Civic Participation, Marc Morial, President and Chief Executive Officer of the National Urba
