Could the 'lobster Bill' be a death knell for the countryside? Lords will scrutinise the 'animal sentience' Bill that could protect the rights of shellfish. So why do many fear it's a Trojan Horse with dire consequences for rural Britain?

Not for nothing is the coastal town of Bridlington in Yorkshire nicknamed the ‘lobster capital of Europe’. Every year, 300 tons of fresh lobster, crab and shrimp are landed there. But Gary Hodgson, director of Venture Seafoods, a Bridlington shellfish processor which has been thriving for 24 years, is worried about his livelihood. A new Bill is being pushed through Parliament which some fear could be a Trojan Horse for eco-zealots and have an impact not only on farming and fishing, but on hunting, angling and horse racing. If it is passed, the Animal Welfare Bill will explicitly recognise in law for the first time that animals are ‘sentient’, a term defined as ‘having the capacity to experience feelings and sensations’. Currently it will apply only to vertebrates (animals with a backbone) but it could be expanded to include invertebrates, such as lobsters and octopuses. ‘It’s a concern,’ Mr Hodgson said this week. ‘Depending on the outcome of the , it could stop any live shellfish tra

Dukes of Hazzard-style moment a car flies off overpass and crash lands on highway directly in front of truck - yet miraculously no one was seriously hurt

A man driving down Highway 99 in California last Wednesday had to make an abrupt stop when a smoking car came flying off an overpass and tumbled on the road, landing just feet in front of him. Dashcam footage from the scene in Yuba City last week shows the man's truck driving down the winding country road, as a white car could be seen flying through the air on the left, leaving behind a plume of smoke. A girl in the truck then starts screaming, at which point the driver seems to notice the scene unraveling before him and stops, before the car makes a nosedive onto the street before him, flips over several times and lands upside down in front of the truck. Metal pieces could be seen flying off the car, which had just narrowly passed through the power lines, with one piece flying at the truck and the battery landing about 60 feet in front of the truck.  Dashcam video shows the moment a car came flying through the air on Highway 99 last Wednesday, leaving behind a plume of smoke The c

Pest and trace... Call handler abused his position to send messages on social media to a female student

A ‘predatory’ call handler at NHS Test and Trace abused his position to send messages on social media to a female student. He legitimately phoned the Oxford undergraduate to check she was quarantining after she returned from Italy. But he contacted the 22-year-old on Instagram just one hour later, saying: ‘Gonna sound weird, but spoke to you thru NHS...’. He said she seemed ‘cool’ and ‘pretty’, and asked where she was from. The language student, who asked not to be named, said the incident in June left her feeling shaken as he knew her address.  A call handler at NHS Test and Trace legitimately phoned the Oxford undergraduate to check she was quarantining after she returned from Italy before messaging the 22-year-old on Instagram just one hour later (file photo) She said: ‘This man acted in a predatory manner and has gone out of his way to track me down and send me creepy messages though my private Instagram page. ‘Someone like that should not be working for NHS Test and Trace, where t

Camille Cosby is seen without her wedding ring in New York City - leading to speculation about state of her 57-year marriage to Bill

Bill Cosby's wife of almost 60 years was seen on Friday without her wedding ring, sparking concern about the state of their marriage. Camille Cosby, 77, was spotted in New York City, leaving the townhouse where she has been living with Bill since his release from prison on June 30. Bill, 84, was freed on a technicality after a judge ruled that he should not have faced trial for sexual assault, because he had made an unwritten agreement with a previous district attorney. He went straight from prison to his Pennsylvania mansion, and then to New York to be reunited with Camille, who he had not seen since his 2018 conviction. Convicted on three counts of aggravated indecent assault, Cosby had not wanted his wife, or daughters, to see him as a prisoner.  Camille Cosby, 77, was seen out and about in New York City on Friday, for the first time since her husband was freed from prison on June 30 Camille and her husband have been at their Upper East Side townhouse since July 1 She was not we

Senator Amy Klobuchar urges liberal Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, 82, to decide 'sooner rather than later' if he will retire

Amy Klobuchar is urging liberal Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer to decide 'sooner rather than later' if he's going to retire so President Joe Biden can appoint a replacement. 'I'm not going to speculate on his retirement,' Klobuchar, who represents Minnesota in the U.S. Senate, told CNN Sunday morning when asked about a report on Breyer's retirement. 'When you look at the court, he has to be concerned about the makeup and you have to be concerned about how you get a justice on the court with all the manipulation that Mitch McConnell has engaged in,' she continued. 'He makes his own decision about if he is going to retire,' Klobuchar said in an interview with State of the Union, 'but if he is going to retire, it should be sooner rather than later if you are concerned about the court.' Democrats are specifically concerned after Donald Trump was able to appoint three Supreme Court justices during his four years in office – most impo

Israeli spyware is found on cellphones of journalists including at New York Times, CNN and AP, as well as members of royal families and politicians around the world

Activists, journalists and politicians around the world have been spied on using cellphone malware developed by a private Israeli firm, it emerged Sunday, igniting fears of widespread privacy and rights abuses. The use of the software, called Pegasus and developed by Israel's NSO group, was reported on by the Washington Post, the Guardian, Le Monde and other news outlets who collaborated on an investigation into a data leak. The leak was of a list of up to 50,000 phone numbers believed to have been identified as people of interest by clients of NSO since 2016.  One of those targeted was Hanan Elatr, the wife of Saudi-born Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who was murdered by a Saudi hit squad in 2018.
