Shuey hurt as Eagles down Crows in AFL

West Coast captain Luke Shuey faces more scans after injuring a calf muscle in his AFL side's 42-point beating of Adelaide.

Shuey, who had hamstring surgery in April, was substituted in the final quarter of the Eagles' 14.14 (98) to 8.8 (56) victory.

Shuey has played only five games this season - Sunday night's Adelaide Oval fixture was his third since returning after 11 rounds out.

The dynamic on-baller also has a history of calf issues but coach Adam Simpson describes his skipper's latest injury as "calf awareness".

"At this stage, I don't know, but we're holding out hope - it's definitely minor, no matter what," Simpson said.

"But because of his history, we didn't want to take a risk."

Veteran Jamie Cripps slotted five goals to help snap West Coast out of the doldrums.

After three consecutive losses, the seventh-placed West Coast are now a win inside the top eight while the 16th-placed Crows slumped to their fourth-straight defeat.

Cripps collected 25 disposals and fellow forward Liam Ryan kicked three goals from seven scoring shots.

Teammate Andrew Gaff (34 disposals) was influential, combining with Tim Kelly (26 touches) and Elliot Yeo (23 possessions, one goal) to form a dominant midfield.

And in defence, captain Shannon Hurn, Jeremy McGovern and Brad Shepherd took 28 marks between them against a misfiring Adelaide attack - the Crows have managed only 18 goals in their past three games.

Adelaide forward Darcy Fogarty and the industrious Ben Keays (30 disposals) both kicked two majors.

Ruckman Reilly O'Brien (27 hit-outs, six marks) just shaded the Eagles' 200-gamer Nic Naitanui (30 hit-outs) while Adelaide's Brodie Smith, also playing his 200th game, collected 27 possessions.

Adelaide's Taylor Walker kicked the sole goal of the opening term before the Eagles, whose spearhead Josh Kennedy was a late withdrawal, clicked into gear.

West Coast scored three goals - two from Cripps - in five minutes to open the second term and they led by two points at halftime.

The visitors then booted 10 goals to Adelaide's four after the long break.

"In the second half, for whatever reason, we were challenged and we dropped away," Crows coach Matthew Nicks said.

"And that is the most disappointing part for our group at the moment, is the brand we would like to be known for ... isn't there consistently at the moment."
