Latino Trump voter, 82, who woke up to find his van in flames outside his California home claims he was targeted over campaign posters in his front yard in support of the current president

Leo Cortez woke on October 9 to find his vehicle on fire An 82-year-old Latino in California claims his van was torched in the run up to the election because he voted for Donald Trump. Leo Cortez, who believes he was targeted because of his multiple Trump 2020 signs in his front yard, was sleeping at his South Pasadena home  on  October 9, when he was woken by neighbors to alert him his van had been set on fire. Fire crews and police responded and the flames were quickly extinguished but left significant damage to the van. 'The truck was unusable. On the outside the damage is not seen so much, but on the inside it was destroyed,' said Cortez.  No one was hurt in the incident. The suspect has not yet been arrested. When Cortez, who was born and raised in LA, reviewed his home security footage, he said he saw a young white man slashing his tires and setting the blaze.  'The video cameras managed to detect a white man who must be over 20 years of age,' Cortez said. Syrian refugees withdraw legal claim for damages against Qatari bank they say funded terror group's torturers 'after harassment campaign by Qatar ruling family's agents'

Four Syrian refugees have withdrawn a claim for damages against a Qatari bank they say funded a terrorist group's torturers after an alleged harassment campaign by agents of the Gulf state's ruling family.  The claimants are bringing a case at the High Court in London against Doha Bank for allegedly allowing itself to be used as a vehicle to funnel large sums of cash to jihadi group the Al Nusra Front. They accuse wealthy Qatari brothers Moutaz and Ramez al-Khayyat of using the bank to transfer money to countries bordering Syria so that it could be channelled to the al Qaida-affiliated group. Eight claimants, who have been granted anonymity, were seeking damages from the bank and the brothers, alleging they suffered physical and psychological torture at the hands of the jihadists. They said the three defendants knew or should have known that they were funding terrorism in breach of international law. But now lawyers for the claimants say four have been forced to withdraw follow

NBA asks teams to require COVID-19 testing for anyone who will be within 30 feet of the court in permitting arenas during the 2020-21 season

The NBA has asked teams to require COVID-19 testing for fans seated within 30 feet of the court during the upcoming season. The Athletic's Shams Charania reported Wednesday that the league sent a memo to all 30 teams about protocols for markets that are eligible to welcome fans during the 2020-2021 campaign, which will begin December 22. A league source has since confirmed the report to the Daily Mail.  The NBA reportedly included language within the memo, requiring anyone who will be within 30 feet of the court to test negative for COVID-19 two days before the game or with a rapid screening prior to tip-off. Each team will still need to adhere to local health guidelines, regarding capacity, social distancing and face coverings. Details of the plan have not been revealed. No10 head of press and former Vote Leave official Lee Cain is in talks to become Boris Johnson's chief of staff

A former Vote Leave press officer is in talks with Boris Johnson about becoming his chief of staff. Lee Cain, Downing Street's director of communications, is said to be in 'advanced discussions' about the new post. The promotion would cap a stellar rise for the former journalist who used to dress up as the Daily Mirror's election chicken, pursuing David Cameron and other leading Tories during the 2010 campaign. The chief of staff will operate as the Prime Minister's 'fixer' at the heart of Government, with the power to issue orders to civil servants across Whitehall. And the move would fill a 'hole' at the centre of Mr Johnson's administration. Neither Dominic Cummings nor the Prime Minister's other leading adviser Lord Lister want the job. Lee Cain (pictured with Boris Johnson), Downing Street's director of communications, is said to be in 'advanced discussions' about the new post Tory MPs have urged Mr Johnson to appoint a heavy

Students will be offered Covid swabs so they can go home for Christmas during six-day 'travel window' after lockdown ends of December 2

University students will be offered Covid tests after lockdown ends on December 2 before having a six-day window to travel home for Christmas under the government's evacuation-style plan.  But critics have warned the plans to create a 'travel window' are 'riddled with holes' and 'leave little room for error'. The plans will see Covid-19 swabs offered between November 30 and December 6.  The 'student travel window' will begin just as England's lockdown finishes on December 2 and it is hoped this will reduce the risk of transmission.  Universities in England have been told to switch from in-person teaching to online classes by early December and then set staggered departure dates between December 3 and 9 to allow families to be reunited. Jo Grady, the University and College Union general secretary, highlighted the tight timescale for a mass movement of people, adding: 'Allowing just a week for around one million students to travel across the co

Rockefeller Center's 2020 Christmas tree - a 75-foot, 11-ton Norway Spruce - will be put up in NYC on Saturday despite the lack of tourists

While the ongoing coronavirus pandemic has thrown much uncertainty over what the holiday season will look like in 2020, one long-standing tradition is set to remain: the Rockefeller Center is still getting its tree.  A 75-foot tall, 11-ton Norway Spruce from Oneonta, in upstate New York, has been selected to take centerstage at the iconic Manhattan landmark this year. The towering tree will be cut down on Thursday morning and hoisted by a ‘huge crane’ onto a 115-foot-long trailer, before beginning its voyage to the Big Apple, organizers announced in a press release Wednesday. The Norway was donated to the city by Daddy Al’s General Store, which is located around 170 miles north of Manhattan, and will be erected outside 30 Rock on Saturday. ‘Say hello to the 2020 Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree!’ the Rockefeller Center wrote in an Instagram post. ‘Hailing from Oneonta, NY, this Norway Spruce will arrive at Rockefeller Center this Saturday, November 14 to kick off the holiday season.’

Men 'sexually assaulted by Cardinal Theodore McCarrick' say they are 'crushed' Pope John Paul II knew of abuse but did not stop it and urge the church to remove him from calendar of saints

Cardinal Theodore McCarrick's alleged victims say they are 'crushed' Pope John Paul II knew of his abuse but did not stop it and have urged the church to remove him from calendar of saints. John Bellocchio, from New Jersey, has sued both McCarrick and the Holy See, alleging the prelate abused him in the 1990s when he was a teenager. McCarrick, 90, was defrocked by Pope Francis last year after decades of allegations that the globe-trotting envoy had sexually molested adults as well as children. The Vatican took the extraordinary step Tuesday of publishing its two-year, 400-plus-page internal investigation into the prelate's rise and fall. It details how McCarrick often shared a bed at his New Jersey home with teenagers he made call him 'uncle Ted' and  puts the lion's share of blame on a dead saint: Pope John Paul II.    Bellocchio said: 'It was very emotional to read. It was very emotional because there were so many opportunities to stop him. So many opp
