Terrorist screams 'islamophobic' as he is jailed for 12 years for planning a knife attack in western Sydney when he was just 16

A young man who stocked up on knives in preparation for a terror attack in Sydney has been jailed. 

The man was just 16 when he and a friend went to a gun shop in Bankstown to buy two serrated M9 bayonet knives on October 12, 2016.

Hours later the pair were arrested at a prayer hall in the western Sydney suburb.

Police found knives, neck gaiters and a handwritten pledge of 'allegiance to the caliph' inside their backpacks, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

The teens were later charged with doing an act in preparation or planning for a terrorist act.

The man, who is now 20, was found guilty by a jury in April. 

He appeared in the NSW Supreme Court on Wednesday where he was sentenced to a maximum of 16 years behind bars with a non-parole period of 12 years.

He will be eligible for parole in October 2028, but was told he could be detained beyond his sentence. 

Throughout the hearing the man screamed: 'I don't want to be here' and 'Islamaphobic'. 

Justice Geoffrey Bellew did not acknowledge the man as he handed down his sentence.

'I am satisfied that a terrorist attack, to be perpetrated on innocent members of the public with the use of the knives which had been purchased, was imminent.'

Throughout the trial the court heard how the man had extremist views from a young age.

The man had refused to stand for the national anthem in high school and accessed ISIS videos online. He also searched for videos about knife attacks.

The friend, who was also a teenager at the time of the arrest, faced trial in 2018. He was sentenced to 16 years behind bars.
