Campaigning for the assembly polls has reached crescendo ahead of Friday deadline even as political activities are picking up at Periyapatna assembly segment where the polls were adjourned following death of a candidate. While the campaign will end at 5 pm at rest of Karnataka, it will go on till May 26 at Periyapatna where the polling is scheduled on May 28. Ahead of the end of campaigning, candidates and their supporters braved heat wave and campaigned in the city and rural areas. Opposition leader Siddaramaiah continued his tour in Varuna segment under heavy police security. He also toured in Chamundeshwari holding a public rally at Yelwal. Chamundeshwari candidate and sitting MLA M Satyanarayan, who was hospitalized following fatigue, attended the meet. All the candidates campaigned without banking on the party stalwarts and banked on padayatras. The district administration has said campaigning should end at 5 pm on Friday as per the Representation of the People Act, 1951. Campaigning is banned 48 hours before the end of polling. Meanwhile, poll process will recommence at Periyapatna on Friday with the fresh poll notification by the Returning Officer A B Basavaraju. "With the fresh poll notification, the nomination from the BJP candidates will be accepted," he told TOI. The candidates, who have slowed down on campaigning following the sudden death of the BJP candidate Sannamogegowda, are readying to relaunch the campaign. Part of the reason for not involving in campaigning is that it will add to their expenditure. The candidates and their representatives have sought clarifications from the poll officials whether the expenses incurred during the period when the polls were adjourned will be taken into account. But there is no clarity. This is a one off case, an official explained. The officials are planning to allow the new BJP candidate who will enter the fray to spend Rs 16 lakh, the upper limit fixed by the EC. This is based on the principle that it is candidates who spend and not the political parties that is taken into account. Other candidates cannot be extended the same relaxation given that they are in fray since they filed the nomination papers in April second week, the official explained. Sources said former minister and BJP MLC C H Vijayashankar could be fielded by the party to contest from Periyapatna. The party leaders are considering to field him. A decision could be taken after the polling for other segments are through, they stated. District BJP chief Siddaraju, who is contesting from H D Kote segment, was not available for comments.
