Mob fury following death of youth in police custody

Protest against mysterious death of a youth, who was allegedly tortured under police custody on April 26, led to unruly scenes at Hansrajpur as after attacking the local police outpost, an angry mob of locals set the jeep of station officer Dullapur and many other motorcycles ablaze on Monday.To pacify the angry locals, deputy inspector general of police Varanasi Range A Satish Ganesh and superintendent of police Ghazipur UC Srivastava ensured lodging a murder case against the station officer Jungipur and his subordinates. A team of three doctors was constituted for postmortem examination of the youth. The officials were waiting for the report before deciding the course of action against the accused policemen.According to reports, a 13-year-old girl of Nasirpur village under Jungipur police station in Ghazipur district went missing since April 24 morning. Initially, her family members registered a case of missing in this connection on April 25. After a few hours they turned up again and informed the police that they suspected role of one Ghanshyam of the same village and his friend of neighbouring village in the episode. On their demand station officer Jungipur, Ashish Mishra summoned Ghanshyam.The DIG said Ghanshyam had gone to Jungipur police station with his family members and was released after initial interrogation. On April 26, Ghanshyam was called to police station again and after an interrogation session of few minutes he was allowed to return home. The DIG claimed that Ghanshyam was never detained by the police and he did not go to police station after April 26.On Sunday night the family of Ghanshyam contacted 108 ambulance service for taking Ghanshyam to local primary health center. On noticing deterioration in the health condition of Ghanshyam the doctors at PHC referred him to district hospital but he died on the way. Following this development the family members of Ghanshyam and a group of villagers went on the rampage. They reached Hansraj police outpost with the body of Ghanshyam.Initially, they attacked the police outpost and ransacked the offices and barracks. On receiving information, cops from several police stations reached there. The bid to control the situation, policemen reached there, which added fuel to the fire of mob fury as villagers set the jeep of SO Dullahpur and other motorcycles standing in outpost compound on fire. The incident brought senior officials on their toes as district magistrate Ghazipur Chandrapal Singh and SP UC Srivastava reached the spot.IG Zone GL Meena also ordered the DIG to reach Ghazipur immediately. Police had a tough time to bring the situation under control. The DIG told TOI on phone, "On the basis of the complaint of Ghanshyam's family a named FIR against SO and few other policemen on Jungipur police station had been registered under sections 302 and 305 of IPC. Since the allegation was serious that Ghanshyam had died due to police atrocity, a three members team of doctors was constituted for postmortem examination. The videography of this process has also been ensured." The officials denied to have initiated punitive action against any policemen in this connection so far.
