Aadhaar-based DCT project may see more delays

The launch of the much-hyped Aadhaar-based direct subsidy (cash) transfer project in LPG continues to hang in balance. The project scheduled to launch in April 2013 was put off because the election for Karnataka assembly was announced in late March. But again it is likely to be postponed further because the election code of conduct continues to be in place till June 3 in Mysore. This is due to the adjournment of polling dates in Periyapatna assembly constituency following the death of BJP candidate Sannamoge Gowda. A fresh notification will be issued on May 3.Officials of Petroleum ministry are preparing to implement it from May 15 and it has asked the gas distributor, bank authorities and oil company executives to be ready before the time as the project is being deferred since January this year.Neeraj Mittal, joint secretary (marketing), Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, had said that after the assembly election was announced, the project will be launched only after the poll. However, it is still unclear whether the poll code will apply to the entire district or only to the assembly segment. When contacted, deputy commissioner and district election officer C Shikha said that she is yet to check with the Election Commission on this score."We will get a clear picture after the fresh notification," the DC said.
