Project to develop Karipur Airport in a deadlock

Lending credence to charges of lack of government interest in acquiring land for the development of Karipur Airport, the state government has apparently not issued orders to appoint a land acquisition officer for the crucial project despite repeated requests from the Malappuram district administration. With the government sitting on the request for the past six months, the district administration is unable to carry out further acquisition proceedings including issuing the mandatory Section 6 (1) notification. This notification has to be carried out by the designated officer. The much delayed land acquisition for airport development had hit a roadblock following resistance on the part of local residents from around the airport.Various trade and business organizations, including the Calicut Chamber of Commerce and Industry, have alleged that the government has been deliberately delaying the project to satisfy local political interests of the IUML. It has been alleged that certain vested interests have been trying to scuttle airport expansion works in favour of Nedumbassery airport and the upcoming Kannur airport.District administration sources said the state revenue department has not acted upon their request to appoint a land acquisition officer for the last six months"We had requested Revenue- B department to appoint the officer in 2012. Several reminders were also sent this year to expedite the matter," said deputy collector, Land Acquisition A Nirmala Kumari. The special land acquisition wing for the airport headed by the deputy collector and comprising 12 members have been able to prepare the alignment sketch for just 5 acres of the 137 acres needed for the airport development project and only 70 of the 176 families have consented to give land for the project. "We have not been able to go to the site due to intense public opposition. The acquisition work for the airport can begin only after the appointment of a land acquisition officer," she added.President of the Calicut Chamber of Commerce and Industry, PTS Unni said the failure to appoint an officer was proof of the insincere stand taken by the government on the issue."Even the promise given by chief minister Oommen Chandy in May 2012 to complete the acquisition of 137 acres for expansion of the airport within three months has not materialized. We intend to launch a series of public protests next month and plan to approach the court by means of a public interest litigation if the delay persists," he added.
