Two teenagers, 16 and 17, charged with murder after 20-year-old man shot dead outside supermarket in South Yorkshire

Two teenagers have been charged with murder after a 20-year-old man was shot dead outside a supermarket in South Yorkshire. 

The boys, aged 16 and 17 and both from Doncaster, were charged this evening in connection with the shooting of Lewis Williams outside a Farmfoods shop in Mexborough, just before 5pm on Monday. 

He died of shotgun wounds to his neck and face during the incident on Wath Road.

The teens, who cannot be named for legal reasons, were charged with murder, possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence and criminal damage. 

The 16-year-old boy has also been charged with assault.

They have been remanded in custody and will appear before Doncaster Magistrates’ Court tomorrow. 

A 20-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder has been bailed pending further enquiries.

In addition, a 22-year-old man and a 32-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder both remain in police custody.

Another 20-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender has been released on bail pending further enquiries.

Several friends paid tribute to Mr Williams.

Emma Jane said: 'RIP Lewis, such a tragic loss, will always remember your cheeky smile.'

Shana Squires added: 'Sleep tight Lewis, going to miss you. Forever in my heart.'

And Gavin French wrote: God bless you sunshine, sleep tight and I will take care of our Nadey.

'Until we meet again, fly high sunshine, fly high.'

The family has started a Gofundme page to help pay for Lewis's funeral costs.

It has so far earned £585 for its £2,000 target.

Forensics officers were seen combing the street outside the supermarket for evidence as the area was cordoned off earlier this week.

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue officers and Yorkshire Ambulance Service paramedics also attended the scene.

DCI James Axe, leading the investigation, said: 'This was a horrific incident in which a young man has tragically lost his life.

'I want to thank those people who have already come forward with information, but I would also urge anyone who may know something to get in touch with us if they haven't already.

'We are particularly keen to speak to anyone who may have been driving in the area of Wath Road at the time of the incident and may have dash cam footage.

'Please speak to any of the officers you see out conducting enquiries – that is what they are there for.'

Anyone with information is urged to call 101 quoting incident number 495 of 11 January or contact independent charity Crimestoppers to give information anonymously.
