Judge orders Derek Chauvin and his beauty queen wife Kellie to make public confidential documents relating to their divorce

Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who is accused of murdering George Floyd, has been ordered to make public confidential documents in his divorce proceedings.

Chauvin, 44, and his beauty queen wife Kellie, 46, were ordered to send redacted versions of dossiers they filed under seal in December.

Their divorce has come under scrutiny after Washington County District Judge Juanita Freeman rejected their proposed settlement in October, citing possible fraud.

The proposal would have transferred most of Derek Chauvin's assets to his wife, adding to speculation that they were trying to protect funds from litigation against the former cop.

Chauvin is charged with the murder of 46-year-old Floyd after he knelt on the black man's neck for eight minutes in footage which reverberated across the world last May.

The ex-cop also faces a separate lawsuit from Floyd's family.

Kellie Chauvin announced she was divorcing her husband days after he was charged. The pair have no children together.

Following Floyd's death, lawyers for the former Mrs Minnesota conveyed 'her utmost sympathy lies with his family, with his loved ones and with everyone who is grieving this tragedy.'

The killing sparked protests and unrest around the US, with the shootings and deaths of other black people - including Breonna Taylor in Louisville, Kentucky - leading to fervent calls for justice.

Chauvin's former colleagues who assisted in the arrest Alexander Kueng, Thomas Lane and Tou Thao, have been charged as accomplices.

Chauvin will face trial in March, while his accomplices are scheduled to stand trial in August. The proceedings have been separated due to social-distancing concerns.

Judge Freeman's ruling in the divorce case does not remove the parameters she previously set to maintain the couple's privacy, to prevent harassment, financial fraud and stalking they had faced in the wake of Floyd's death, the Star Tribune reported.

Following Judge Freeman's refusal of their first divorce offer, the Chauvins made further filings in early December which were confidential and sealed.

The first document had been so heavily redacted that it was impossible to understand.

But the judge's ruling made clear Kellie Chauvin would have received all equity in the couple's two homes, all the money in their bank and investment accounts and all the money from Derek Chauvin's pension and retirement accounts.

Marc Beyer, a divorce attorney not representing either party in the Chauvin case, said at the time that it was possible the agreement was created to get assets out of Derek Chauvin's name before a possible civil judgment against him.

The lawsuit against Chauvin and three other officers did not specify damages, but family attorney Benjamin Crump has said they would seek 'a precedent that makes it financially prohibitive for police to wrongfully kill marginalized people.'

Derek and Kellie Chauvin are also due to appear at Washington County District Court tomorrow on felony charges accusing them of failing to claim $464,433 in joint income.

The couple were married around 2010.

Ahead of the Mrs Minnesota beauty contest in 2018, Kellie Chauvin raved about her husband, telling the Pioneer Press: 'Under all that uniform, he's just a softie.' 

She also told the outlet: 'He's such a gentleman. He still opens the door for me, still puts my coat on for me.

'After my divorce, I had a list of must-haves if I were ever to be in a relationship, and he fit all of them.' 

Kellie told the paper she fled Laos with her family as a child and came to America as a refugee.

She won the Mrs. Minnesota contest in October that year and went to Las Vegas in 2019 to compete for the national round of the beauty pageant. 

Kellie Chauvin has two children with her first husband who is deceased.
