Mystery as teen girl, 13, dies after drowning in a public swimming pool

A teenage girl pulled from a public swimming pool at Maitland in NSW's Hunter region has died despite frantic efforts to revive her.

Emergency services were called to an aquatic centre on Les Darcy Drive, Maitland, about 3.30pm on Friday on reports a girl was in trouble in the water.

Police said the 13-year old, yet to be formally identified, was pulled from the water and lifeguards commenced CPR.

NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived and continued CPR before rushing her to John Hunter Hospital but she was pronounced dead at 8.30pm.

Police are investigating and will prepare a report for the coroner.
