President Donald Trump calls on his supporters not to purchase Goodyear tires, after previously warning about "cancel culture," after a staff member shared a viral photo of a corporate policy prohibiting "Make America Great Again" and other workplace political attire.
"Don't buy GOODYEAR TIRES-they've declared a BAN ON MAGA Caps. Get better tires for even less! (This is what the Far Left Democrats are doing. Two can play the same game, and we have to start playing it now!)," he tweeted Wednesday morning.
The tweet came in response to an employee posting a photo from a Topeka, Kansas, Goodyear plant, obtained by CNN affiliate WIBW, showing a slide during a training that "Black Lives Matter" and LBGT pride apparel were "acceptable" and "Blue Lives Matter," "All Lives Matter," "MAGA Attire," and other political material were "unacceptable"
Goodyear issued a statement following the President's tweet stating that "the visual in question has not been created or distributed by Goodyear Corporate," but asking its associates to "refrain from the workplace expressions in support of political campaigning for any candidate or political party, as well as similar forms of advocacy that fall outside the scope of racial justice and equity issues."
The organization also claimed that it has "always completely supported, and will continue to support, equality and law enforcement."
In a major swing area, Trump's tweet can also signal an appeal to voters: The tire firm is headquartered in Akron , Ohio.
Coincidentally, the custom limousine used by the President, branded as the "Beast," has Goodyear Tires tradition. In a statement in 2009 Goodyear said it is "the exclusive tire for the US Secret Service 's presidential limo and regular tire."
Trump, who railed against political correctness during his campaign in 2016, is campaigning this year as a fighter against what he believes is a left-wing "cancel culture" that aims to punish or ban people for words or actions allegedly offensive.
"One of their political tools is the 'cancel mentality' — driving people out of their jobs, bullying dissenters and demanding complete compliance from anyone who disagrees.
That's the very concept of totalitarianism, and it's totally alien to our culture and ideals, and it has absolutely no place in the United States of America, "Trump said at Mount Rushmore in a speech on July 3.
Trump's Goodyear tweet is far from the first time he 's called for people to boycott, cancel, and fir, and a wide variety of products and entities.
Since 2012, CNN's fact-checking unit has assembled a non-exhaustive list of over 30 cases spanning TV personalities and networks, various media outlets, Macy's department store, and Mexico City.
