It grew more than 14,000 acres overnight and covers 46,225 acres in Napa and Sonoma Counties -- larger than the size of Washington, D.C. -- also is totally uncontained, the government said. Four people are injured in the fire.
Videos from Vacaville showed flames leaping through a single neighborhood, from trees to homes to picket fences.
Philip Galbraith, 52, said he and his 20-year-old son received no warning of the coming fire before a neighbor began"desperately banging" on his door around 2:45 a.m.
"I got from the house in pretty much what I had on," he said.
The police have also ordered residents to evacuate in a lot of different areas in which groups of fires, also likely due to lightning, are spreading rapidly. The SCU Lightning Sophisticated, a set of roughly 20 distinct fires, over doubled in size overnight, and is now burning 85,000 acres across five counties -- mostly in unpopulated regions near the Bay Area -- and is only 5% contained. A third blend of fires, called the CZU August Lightning Sophisticated, has grown to 10,000 acres and forced evacuations in Santa Cruz County.
Firefighters had hoped for calmer weather overnight, but gusty winds came instead, pushing the flame toward vegetation and other fresh gas,'' stated Lynnette Round, a spokeswoman for California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, or Cal Fire.
"Now they are going to have another firefight," she stated, as the winds and dry, hot weather continue.
Woken at two a.m., a Vacaville resident fled with his puppy and not much else.
Clayton Jack, 31, a professional wrestler who lives in Vacaville, said he had been awakened with a house guest around 2 a.m. on Wednesday and promptly smelled smoke in the air.
"I go outside and see the large, red, orange glow on the mountain and then I see a lot of light," Mr. Jack stated. "And then I see a lot of cop cars that were driving up and down the road."
Mr. Jack, who wrestles under the name Kal Jak, said an officer informed him it was time to leave.
"I managed to grab my puppy, my own stuff, my laptop, my camera and then just out there I drove off," he explained.
In the car, Mr. Jack realized that he smelled"head to toe like flame," he said. He drove beyond fire trucks equipped with spotlights and megaphones that were carrying urgent messages .
"This was something from a movie," said Mr. Jack, that managed to depart Vacaville by 3 a.m. and drove northeast to Lake Tahoe, in which his family owns a cabin.
"I am really fortunate to have somewhere to keep in the present time," he said. "Hopefully that the house doesn't burn down."
Gov. Gavin Newsom announced a state of emergency Tuesday in reaction to the fires, which have struck the nation as it combats the effects of a sweltering heat wave, rolling blackouts along with the coronavirus pandemic.
The move will create crucial tools available to fight the countless wildfires that are burning throughout the country and also have been affected by the warmth and sustained high winds, the governor's office stated.
"We're deploying every source available to keep communities safe because California battles fires across the nation during these extreme states," Mr. Newsom said in a statement. "California and its federal and local partners are working in lock step to meet with the challenge and stay cautious in the face of continued dangerous climate conditions."
The flames throughout the country have worried the state's mutual aid system, which has made it difficult for jurisdictions to obtain the firefighting resources they desire, according to the emergency proclamation. The declaration enables Mr. Newsom to mobilize resources from out of country, a top aide to the governor said in an interview Tuesday night. The fire, which is 38 percent included, has forced people to evacuate, destroyed a dozen buildings and is threatening thousands more.

The blackouts, which started on Friday, were reminiscent of an energy crisis 20 years back, once the state's botched deregulation of the energy system left huge numbers of people in the dark and drove the wholesale cost of power skyward.
