Bill Clinton, once the dominant Democrat, now a footnote at convention

It was a clearly diminished Bill Clinton who dealt with the Democratic convention.

I don't mean diminished at a physical sense, although the famously raspy voice sounded slimmer and, turning 74 on Wednesday, he seemed a bit more delicate.

This was the way he talked from his sofa at Chappaqua. It simply didn't seem like a Clinton address. It sounded like a language that might have been written by anyone.

It was utterly generic.

People who liked the Clinton presidency and people who despised it's consistently agreed that the man from Hope was a great communicator, even when he went on, as he did with so many State of the Union speeches. But that guy did not show up Tuesday night. Clinton just had five minutes, and has been relegated to the lesser-watched very first hour of this proceedings. A retail politician into his core, he'd no crowd power to fuel his performance.

The ex-president described the election as a job interview and scored some points by criticized President Trump's handling of the pandemic:"The Oval Office should be a control centre, rather it's a storm centre. There's only chaos"

Clinton did ridicule Trump as a man"spending hours per day watching TV and zapping people on social media," saying that in a real catastrophe, this kind of approach (to"blame, bully and belittle")"collapses like a house of cards." That was the only time he briefly looked, nicely, Clintonesque.

He wrapped up by saying Joe Biden had helped bring the nation back from recession earlier, and proceeded through a quick collection of policies, such as"paid family and medical leave," which seemed 1992-ish. There was no narrative, nothing especially private.

For mepersonally, who covered both his attempts --and even with his wife yet to address the convention--that was the end of the Clinton era. In a virtual conference, he had been just another ex-pol. He was a liberal presidentto be certain, but one who worked with Newt Gingrich and signed the Defense of Marriage Act. A self-described New Democrat afterward, he is widely dismissed today as a mushy-minded centrist who's far out of step with the increasingly left wing celebration.

Clinton always had a love-hate connection with what he called the"knee-jerk liberal media," which largely turned against him through his impeachment and finally proved he was a liar. But as the world understands his wife ran for president in 2008 (when he went too far in slamming Obama) and was the nominee four years ago, when the Clinton Foundation was a significant matter. The couple has never really gotten off the stage.

Remember all the speculative in tales in 2016 about how a former president could adapt to the use of First Gentleman? He did send a stirring convention speech for Obama's reelection, nevertheless has a way of stealing the spotlight.

But there's an even more basic reason why the Biden team didn't give Bubba a more notable speaking slot. The #MeToo motion has prompted even some liberal loyalists to denounce Clinton because of his connections with Monica Lewinsky, Paula Jones, Kathleen Willey and many others. Some women who brushed his sexual misconduct in the 1990s now say he should have resigned. And the current reports of him hanging around with child predator Jeffrey Epstein--the Daily Mail has images of Bill getting a neck massage from one of Epstein's alleged victims--'ve been a brutal reminder of his checkered past.

Clinton has been starring at Democratic conventions since 1988, when his endless speech landed with such a thud in the hallway he needed to go on Johnny Carson and make fun of himself. Four years after he had been the nominee. But that was over a quarter-century past, and the world has moved on.

John Kerry, another past nominee, gave a much more energetic address praising Biden's foreign policy record.

And Jill Biden, a teacher speaking from her former Wilmington large school, movingly described how they treated a broken household after the catastrophe that claimed the lives of Joe's first wife and daughter--using that as a metaphor for healing the nation.

The online choreography was better on the second night, using sharper themes, although there were embarrassing moments like 16 people in boxes talking in unison.

There is a Republican existence for the second straight night, together with Colin Powell speaking for Biden and Cindy McCain (whose husband hated Trump) leading a video about his friendship with Biden. I once saw Biden and John McCain backslapping in a Washington reception, and their attachment was quite real.

Meanwhile, individuals who said audiences would not be daunted by this strange hybrid were suitable. Ratings for the first night (led by MSNBC) fell 28 percent over four decades ago, to approximately 18.6 million.

As for the testimonials of Monday night, some Democratic partisans liked the rapid-fire jump-cutting that I found so disjointed and awkward, and that's fine. 1 virtue, they stated, was that the speeches were shorter.

But a lot of these were too brief, mere snippets, to the point where you wondered why the party bothered to find those speakers. I really don't pine for the days of Lincoln-Douglas oratory, but a good speech includes an arc, creating an argument made to attract the audience along. Michelle Obama had enough time to meld the personal and the political. Some others felt just like were being jammed into an overcrowded bundle just for their name value. And I was grading on a curve.

The MSNBC panelists, to be sure, were overjoyed. Rachel Maddow told audiences that"nobody breathed for 18 minutes" through Michelle's speech. "I mean my heart dropped about four inches in my chest" That's the new thrill-up-the-leg, as now-departed MSNBCer Chris Matthews said of Michelle's husband back in 2008.

Some left-wingers, of course, are so desperate to beat Trump that they can not be bothered to critique the event they mar the message.

"What I saw Monday night," writes New York Times columnist Frank Bruni,"was not something to be parsed or graded. It had been something to rush toward and enjoy: a buffet to your hungry. It was salvation.

Salvation trumps all, I guess.
