A marshal killed after a car spun off the Brands Hatch track and hit him has been named as a former mayor and serving councillor.  

Robert Foote, in his 60s, was working as a volunteer marshal on Saturday when a car spun off the famous track in Kent and hit him.

The serving Epsom and Ewell Borough Councillor died from serious injuries sustained in the crash shortly before 3pm.

Another person on foot and the driver of the car were taken to hospital for treatment.

Lewis Hamilton said he was 'devastated' following the death, while friends of Mr Foote took to social media to pay tribute.  

Mr Foote, known as Rob to friends and family, represented the Cuddington ward in Surrey since 2003 and served as Mayor in 2014-15.

Friend Steve Whiteway posted on Facebook: 'Robert Foote RIP.

'It is with deep sorrow I inform you that our friend Rob Foote, has been killed at Brands Hatch, whilst serving as a volunteer marshal at the famous motor racing circuit.

'The crash yesterday (Saturday July 31) at 3pm happened after a car spun off the track during a British Automobile Racing Club Car Championship event. Despite the best efforts of the medics, Rob died of his injuries.'

Mr Foote was also a 'highly valued' part time driver at Epsom Coaches.

While he was Mayor, he and wife Rosemary launched the Epsom Buses Silver Service bringing provincial links to the town centre.

It is understood Mrs Foote died of cancer in December aged 70.

Mr Whiteway added in his post to the Epsom Coaches Facebook group: 'Rob's talents and kindness spread very wide and it was typical of him to be giving his time so freely to motor sport.

'Coming so soon after the sad loss of Rosemary to cancer, our thoughts and prayers are with his family and wide circle of friends at this difficult time.'

Formula 1 champion Mr Hamilton said he was 'devastated' by the tragedy at Brands Hatch - a home circuit close to his heart - and paid tribute to the 'heroes' in orange jumpsuits who make racing possible.

The British Mercedes driver wrote in an Instagram post: 'Devastated to hear of the passing of a marshal at the Brands Hatch Circuit.

'These volunteer marshals are what makes racing possible, they are heroes. My heart is with his family.'

More than £13,000 has been raised to support Mr Foote's family and friends.

Alice Powell, who created the GoFundMe page, wrote in its description: 'Marshals play a huge role in Motorsport. Without them, Motorsport cannot happen. Marshals are a vital part of the Motorsport family.

'Unfortunately, on Saturday the 31st July, there was an incident at Brands Hatch where a marshal sadly passed away.

'This page is to raise money for the family and friends affected by this incident. Our thoughts and prayers go out to them.'

Kent, Sussex and Surrey Air Ambulance confirmed they were called to the crash at the iconic former Grand Prix race track near West Kingsdown in Kent - with their helicopter seen landing on the asphalt.

BARC, who cancelled the rest of the day's racing before the event resumed on Sunday, confirmed it was working with Motorsport UK and Kent to investigate the incident.

A spokesman said: 'On behalf of everyone connected with the BARC, we are devastated by loss of one of the amazing volunteer marshal community who do so much to enable the sport to take place.

'Our thoughts and best wishes are with the family and friends of all those involved.'

Kent Police found no suspicious circumstances and are working with motorsport authorities to compile a report for the coroner.

A police spokesman said: 'Kent Police was called at around 2.55pm on Saturday 31 July 2021 to a report of a collision involving a car and two people on foot at Brands Hatch.

'A man in his 60s, from the Surrey area, was declared deceased at the scene.. The second person on foot, and the driver of the car, were also taken to a local hospital for treatment.

'No suspicious circumstances have been identified and officers are working with motorsport authorities to compile a report for the coroner.'
