One person is killed after a suspected gas explosion rips through a home in east London

One person has died in an explosion which ripped through a home in Stratford, east London. 

Authorities were called to the scene at Waddington Road just before 8am this morning.   

The person inside the property was pronounced dead at the scene.

It remains unclear what sparked the incident although an early assessment suggested it could have been a gas explosion. 

A number of road closures remain in place and several nearby homes have been evacuated. 

Emergency services are continuing to work together to establish the exact cause. 

A statement from the Metropolitan Police said: 'Police were called at 07:54hrs on Sunday, 1 November to reports of an explosion at a property in Waddington Road, E15.

'Officers attended along with London Fire Brigade and London Ambulance Service. 

'A large explosion was found to have taken place inside the property. 

'Emergency services entered the building and sadly, one person was pronounced dead at the scene. 

'Road closures remain in place and nearby residents have been evacuated as a precautionary measure. An early assessment suspected the caused to be a gas explosion. 

'Emergency services are continuing to work together to establish the exact cause which is currently unexplained.'
