Every driver's worst nightmare: Shocking moment oblivious cyclist rides out into the road without looking and is sent flying

Terrifying footage has emerged of the moment a cyclist is hit by a car after suddenly riding out into the road.

The shocking Australian dashcam video shows the cyclist swing out unexpectedly from behind a white car, directly in front of the driver who cannot stop in time.

'Woah,' shrieked the driver as he hits the cyclist at low speed, with an awful crunching noise.

The cyclist, who was wearing a helmet and a backpack, flies up onto the bonnet and hits the windshield before being thrown about two metres onto the road.

'Holy f**k,' says the shocked driver as the cyclist lays on the ground in front of his now-stationary car. 

The child can be seen moving as the driver, still in shock, says 'Oh my God!'.

The driver later wrote that the child did not appear to have any broken bones. 

The date stamp on the video suggests the incident happened on Friday at 5.30pm.

The driver who sent the video in wrote on the post that the cyclist appeared to be uninjured and the police report said he wasn't at fault.

'It was a massive scare for me,' the driver wrote.

'If look closely they never even looked over to check for oncoming cars. The cyclist was able to get up OK and ambos checked them over and (the cyclist) didn't appear to have any broken bones but still went to get checked out at hospital.'

In response to the post hundreds of drivers reacted with horror - many with similar stories of their own.

'That was scary, chills down my spine,' wrote one.  

'I had a close call similar to this at night, missed the guy by centimetres, couldn't sleep well for a few nights.'

The number of cyclists killed on Australian roads has increased over the last three years, according to a Benchmarking Road Safety report by the Australian Automobile Association .

In the 12 months to June 2020, 48 cyclists died, compared with 34 deaths in the previous corresponding period, an increase of more than 40 per cent. 

Cyclists were the only road user group to record an increase in fatalities during the period.
