Lindsey Vonn inspired Tiger Woods to an opening 70 - the same score he shot when he won his first three Green Jackets. With his new girlfriend watching him tee off, the world No 1 suffered an erratic opening when he hit a fan on the leg with his second shot on the 2nd hole and then hit a beer being held by another spectator with his tee shot on three. The four-time winner still parred the opening five holes and seemed set for a late charge when he went three-under par after 13.But a three-putt bogey at the 14th stalled his momentum and he signed for a two-under par score - the same as in 1997, 2001 and 2002.Woods said: “It’s a good start. It was a good day. A solid day. Right now I’m only four back and I’m right there.”Olympic ski champion Vonn, who is recovering from knee surgery, only walked the first hole before retreating to the Augusta National clubhouse.“I can’t really walk too much,” Vonn said. “And it’s so hilly here. I’ll be here every day to the end.”

Woods' playing partner Luke Donald cracked his driver, but still carded five birdies in his 71.The world No,4 said: “I found out on the 15th that I got a little crack in my driver, so I’m going to have to replace that, which wasn’t very good for the old mental side.“I don’t have a backup with me, so I’m going to have to get one for tomorrow’s round. I can’t play it any more. It’s going to be tough.”Defending champion Bubba Watson shot a 75 while his playing partner Ian Poulter was even worse with a 76.Poulter tweeted: "Can't be disappointed with that round I drove it so bad. 4 fairways in reg when they are 40 yards wide. Horrific day. Sorry folks no excuse."* WELSHMAN Jamie Donaldson will auction his golf ball for charity after making a hole-in-one on his Masters debut. The Macclesfield-based Welshman aced the 177-yard 6th hole with a “soft 7-iron” - only the fifth player to achieve the feat in the event’s 77-year history.

After carding a 74, Donaldson said: “It was pretty special. There were high fives everywhere - it was awesome. My dad and my brother were there watching and they were all jumping around.“You would never expect to make a hole-in-one there - you’re staring down that hole and the green’s like there’s dead elephants buried everywhere.“The shot was right down the flag, but you don’t know whether it’s the right club until you see it land and then it went in. It was just like: ‘Wow’.“I kept the ball. I’ll probably auction it with a flag for charity. to raise some money. It was a great day, good fun.”* BY CONTRAST, Graeme McDowell took four putts on the par-three 12th on his way to a double-bogey five. The US Open champion of 2010, who finished with a one-over 73, said: “I just made a bit of a mess on 12, took the percentage shot, the first putt through the fringe, just came up short and I had a woeful second putt.“But such is life. You’ve got to take the rough with the smooth on this course.“I walked off the 12th green about to kind of throw the toys out of the pram, and I just have to remind myself to keep it going.”
