Two female cops are taken to hospital after colliding head-on with a woman in a Volvo - as investigators try to figure out how the crash happened

Two female police officers have been taken to hospital after colliding with a woman driving a Volvo.

Emergency services were called to Brunker Road, Newcastle, 162km north east of Sydney, at 1.30am on New Year's Day. 

Officers allege a marked police vehicle travelling south and a Volvo travelling north collided in the southbound lanes.

A female constable and her passenger - a senior constable - had bruising and arm injuries.

They were taken to John Hunter Hospital but have since been released.

Two civilians were also in the police car when it crashed, but they did not require hospital treatment. 

The driver of the Ford Volvo, 56, was trapped in her vehicle for some time. 

She was eventually released and taken to John Hunter Hospital for treatment of non life-threatening injuries and mandatory testing. 

Inquiries are continuing.
