No premieres, film festivals, fashion weeks or glittering parties . . . If you reckoned last year was tough, then spare a thought for those poor celebrities. 

Denied their usual means of hogging the limelight, they’ve had to concoct ever more desperate ways to get noticed via their own social media accounts.

When coronavirus first hit, actress Demi Moore, 58, holed up at her ranch in Idaho with her three adult daughters, their boyfriends and — bizarrely — her ex-husband Bruce Willis, the man she divorced 20 years ago. 

They posted pictures of themselves cooking, singing, playing games in matching pyjamas and generally behaving like a dysfunctional Von Trapp family. 

Missing was 65-year-old Bruce’s current wife Emma, mother of his two young daughters, who chose to quarantine hundreds of miles away in California. Can’t think why.

MOST DESPERATE HOUSEWIFE

Covid interruptions meant that this year’s Britain’s Got Talent ended up being a bit of a damp squib, and poor Amanda Holden, 49, couldn’t flash her flesh in her usual number of Ofcom complaint-dresses. 

But not to worry, she was still able to show off to her 1.6 million followers when she mowed the lawn in her wedding dress and took the bins out in a sparkly cocktail number.

MOST BONKERS STORYTELLER

Fergie kept the nation entertained (perhaps not in the way she intended) when she read a children’s story every afternoon.

Throwing herself into the role, the Duchess dressed up in costumes (including as a giant banana) put on silly voices and surrounded herself with giant knitted toys and vegetables. 

Bonkers, but a refreshing change from other duchesses who may take themselves a tad too seriously.

Celebrity yoga bunnies are nothing new but TV presenter Fearne Cotton, 39, took things to a whole new level when she showed off her moves in her back garden. 

‘Air time, head space,’ she wrote as she mastered the very tricky ‘crow’ pose.

BEST BLOOMING BIRTHDAY

Planes grounded, bars and restaurants closed? No problem for supermodel Naomi Campbell, who turned 50 back in May.

‘Without you there would be no Naomi, I am a work in progress,’ she gushed to her followers, before adding: ‘I’m so grateful for all my 50 years on this planet.’

And grateful, too, to have enough vases to hold the masses of roses she received, which made her apartment look like Kew Gardens.

KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON AWARD

Before lockdown, Liz Hurley, 55, spent most of her time posing in bikinis in order to plug her line of swimwear.

Therefore, when we were all ordered to stay at home there was something rather comforting and reassuring to see it was business as usual for the actress. 

She posed in an endless line of colourful bikinis from her collection in the grounds of her Herefordshire farmouse and uploaded one video where she performed Carry On Campinglike stretching exercises in a tiny two-piece.

Nicole Kidman, 53, had some steamy love scenes in The Undoing with Hugh Grant, but she was just as open about her real-life love affair with country music singer husband Keith Urban, 53. 

The pair have spent recent months holding hands, hugging, gazing into each other’s eyes and generally looking like they’ve escaped from the cover of a schmaltzy novel.

While many of us packed on the timber during lockdown thanks to comfort-eating and closed gyms, some celebrities used the time to get into the shape of their lives

Famous for her voluptuous curves, singer Adele, 32, uploaded a photo in May that showed off her staggering seven-stone weight loss, thanks to a diet and exercise overhaul.

Also shedding the pounds was Australian actress Rebel Wilson, 40, who played Fat Amy in the Pitch Perfect movies. She shed five stone by running every day.

These days the only ginger spice Geri Halliwell, 48, embraces is the stuff in her kitchen. 

Since winning a celebrity Great British Bake Off, Geri has been cooking up a storm. 

During lockdown she showed off her chocolate cake and choux buns (and not the ones we remember bursting out of the Union Jack dress).

What you get on Instagram is rarely what you see in real life.

Influencers and stars regularly retouch their images to nip in waists, lengthen legs, smooth out wrinkles and make lips puffy and pouty.

Not Ulrika Jonsson, 53, who earlier this year wrote about being a sun worshipper.

In July she uploaded a picture that showed the shocking effects of those rays in all their wrinkly glory.

Her skin may have been the same shade and texture as a roasted chicken — but she didn’t seem to give a cluck.

What beats getting noticed on a red carpet in a revealing gown? Stripping off at home, of course. 

This award is shared between two women who used to be best friends but fell out over a personal trainer.

Madonna, 62, made an increasingly bizarre series of posts, including one from the bath culminating in the singer posing on the toilet this week.
