Top college athletic departments have reported 6,629 coronavirus cases among players and staff - but only 78 of 130 schools shared all infection data

College football's largest athletic departments have reported 6,629 cases of coronavirus among all student athletes, coaches, and staff members, but that figure is believed to be far lower than the actual infection totals.

The NCAA hasn't released comprehensive testing data, but the New York Times has compiled figures from the 130 schools that make up the Football Bowl Subdivision, which is essentially the larger, wealthier half of Division I athletic departments.

However, the Times' data is incomplete because only 78 schools have reported all infections, whereas 33 have revealed partial information, and another 19 have not announced any testing results at all.

No school has reported any deaths in connection to the virus, according to the Times. The data encompasses all sports, and not just football, exclusively.

So far this season, 128 college football games have been postponed or cancelled, according to CBS Sports. Most notably, the Ohio State-Michigan football game, which was scheduled to take place on Saturday, was called off due to the Wolverines' outbreak.

Of the 52 schools that released limited or no testing data, most have cited privacy laws to explain the decision, while some have not given any reason whatsoever.

Some cases were too high profile to be ignored.

Clemson quarterback and Heisman hopeful Trevor Lawrence missed several games with COVID-19 — an absence that would have been hard to miss for most college football fans. Alabama coach Nick Saban sat out of one game because of coronavirus, and nearly missed a previous game because of a false positive.

Other schools felt that shielding data from the public would only lead to inaccurate reporting about the situation.

'We felt there was nothing to hide,' Wisconson athletic director and former Badgers football coach Barry Alvarez told the Times. 'We felt that it was in our best interest and everyone else's best interest to put out accurate information, particularly if we had to cancel a game, so you wouldn't have rumors or misinformation.'

According to the Times' data, the Big Ten has been hit the hardest, with 1,850 cases. Minnesota (336) and Iowa (330) had the most reported cases among men per schools.

Northwestern, which will play Ohio State for the Big Ten football title, has refused to disclose any COVID-19 testing results.
