Teenage girl, 17, dies and another is left fighting for life after a stabbing in an apartment in Sydney's west - as police arrest a 19-year-old known to them

A teenage girl has died and another is in a critical condition after being stabbed overnight.

Emergency services were called to an apartment complex on Church Street, Parramatta, in Sydney's west, about 10.45pm on Friday, following reports of an altercation.

The two 17-year-old girls were found with stab wounds and rushed to Westmead Hospital.

One of the victims tragically died and is yet to be formally identified, while the other remains in critical condition.

Following investigations, police have arrested a 19-year-old boy known to the two girls about 2.50am on Saturday.

He is assisting with inquiries.
