'Drive left in Australia' road sign goes viral as locals blame tourists for hurtling down the wrong side of busy highways - with some even spotting the signs in CHINESE

A photo of the sign was posted in a community Facebook page, with dozens of locals calling out tourists for not knowing Australia's basic road rules.

'They have these on Brand Highway in WA because of the amount of tourists that have caused head on collisions by driving on the wrong side of the road' one man said.

'These are all along the Great Ocean Road. They also have "do not stop for photos in the middle of the road" signs too', someone else said.

Signs written in Mandarin are also popping up on Victoria's Great Ocean Road to stop Chinese tourists crashing at some of the state's most notorious intersections.

The Indian Ocean Drive in Western Australia has similar signs in Mandarin and German.

Sally Cannon, from Apollo Bay in Victoria, put up four signs in Chinese at two intersections which have been scene to numerous accidents.

While it's illegal for members of the public to erect their own road signs, this hasn't deterred Ms Cannon.

Speaking about one of the crash sites, she told Yahoo7: 'It's a notorious intersection and I had a friend recently whose nephew got cleaned up.'

Ms Cannon says the regions attracts a lot of visitors and the signs needed to be in Chinese.

'I've told people you've got everything but a brass band playing to tell you to stop at that intersection. It's been the scene of so many accidents,' she said.

The signs – two at the intersection of Colac-Lorne Road and Deepdene Road, Murroon and two at Apollo Bay near the Great Ocean Road – include give way and stop signs.

Ms Cannon's friend, who speaks Mandarin, helped her with the text and organised a sign maker to create them.

Only about 30 per cent of the world's population drives on the left side of the road.
