The (not so) Great British Bake Off! Viewers accuse standard of this year's contestants to be far WORSE than previous years after string of botched bakes and 'poor' show-stoppers

Viewers of this year's Great British Bake Off are claiming this year’s contestants are far worse than previous years.

Fans of the Channel 4 bakery show, now in its 11th season, have been voicing their dismay and frustration on Twitter after a string of botched bakes and 'poor' show stoppers this year.

They claim that standards have slipped compared to the glories of previous years, despite judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith continuing to praise performances.

One user wrote: 'Is it just me or has the standard of the bakers this year had not been as good as previous years?'

Another said: 'Is it just me or are the bakers not the best this year? Multiple sub standard signatures, mass failings on the technical and as for the Showstopper...'

It was desserts week in the semi-final, which saw the remaining five bakers try their hand at cheesecakes, Sussex pond puddings and jelly cakes.

For the technical, most of the bakers had never heard of a pond pudding, which sees and entire lemon encased in suet pastry, leaving some viewers less than impressed.

Almost all of the puddings collapsed and started leaking, and by the time they were ready for judging some of them were in pieces.

A few of the bakers also failed to impress judges with their cheesecakes, with Peter's lime and ginger creations sinking in the middle.

During 80's week, Laura forgot to turn her ice cream machine on, resulting in a melting, lopsided cake.

Bake Off fans were also left disheartened during chocolate week on episode 4 when all contestants botched a batch of brownies.

Paul added that her brownies looked like they had been 'dropped' as the challenge proved to be a miss for all the bakers.

Cakes throughout the series have also been criticised by viewers, as contestants had to make celebrity hero cake busts, which went a bit wrong, like Mark's chocolate and orange Ziggy cake.
