A man has died after falling 100 feet from a church steeple where work was being carried out despite paramedics' desperate attempts to save him. 

The 64-year-old, from Birmingham, was pronounced dead at the scene today at St Nicolas' Church, Kings Norton.  

Paramedics rushed to the scene at 11.25am and police have cordoned off the church and graveyard while investigations have been launched into the cause of his death.

A rope could be seen on the spire of the church where maintenance work was being carried out by steeplejacks but it is not know if the man was working on the rigging.  

Two ambulances, a paramedic officer, a MERIT trauma doctor and the Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford, Shropshire, were sent to the scene.  

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: 'We were called at 11:25am to reports of a patient who had fallen near to Pershore Road South.

'We sent two ambulances, a paramedic officer, a MERIT trauma doctor and the Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford.

'On arrival we discovered one patient. Further details will follow when available.'  

They told the Express and Star: 'He was found to have suffered serious injuries and ambulance staff immediately began administering advanced life support. 

'Unfortunately, despite their best efforts it became apparent nothing could be done to save him and he was confirmed dead at the scene.'

A spokeswoman for West Midlands Police said: 'We were called to reports of a man falling while working on a church in Pershore Road South, Kings Norton, at around 11.30am. 

'A 64-year-old man from Birmingham was sadly pronounced dead at the scene and his family have been informed.

'The Health and Safety Executive have been informed and enquiries are continuing.'
