Gunmen storm hardware store with grenades and kill four workers in fiery attack blamed on warring Mexican drug cartels

At least four workers were attacked with gunfire and grenades before their hardware shop was burned down in the latest violent incident between rival drug cartels in the central Mexican state of Guanajuato.

The Celaya Public Security Ministry said a gang of five men with cartel connections arrived on a truck and a motorcycle and opened fire before tossing grenades inside the store at 4pm local time Tuesday.

The assailants then set the business on fire before fleeing from the scene.

The police did not identify any of the four victims pending notification of the family members.

A photograph leaked on social media showed at least three of the victims' charred bodies after the local fire department was able to control the blaze.

The attackers also left a message attached to a banner, according to Mexican news magazine Proceso. However, the contents of the message were not made public.

No arrests had been made as of Wednesday.

The municipality of Celaya and other cities in the state have been rocked by a nearly three-year turf war between the local Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, one of the three most powerful criminal syndicates in the country.

José Alfredo 'El Yeyo' Sánchez, an alleged former member of the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel who then switched sides to the rival Jalisco New Generation Cartel, was detained in the southern state of Veracruz on Tuesday, a couple of hours before gunmen killed four hardware store workers in the central state of Guanajuato, where the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel holds its home base

The Guanajuato State Attorney General's Office is investigating whether the attack is linked to Tuesday afternoon's capture of José Alfredo 'El Yeyo' Sánchez at a shopping center in the southeastern state of Veracruz.

The 38-year-old, who was detained by the Marines during a non-violent encounter, was a high-ranking leader in the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel.

He reportedly had a falling-out with Adán 'El Azul' Ochoa, who took over the reigns of the criminal organization following the August arrest of the group's leader, Jose Antonio 'El Marro' Yépez, and then allegedly switch sides and joined the rival Jalisco New Generation Cartel.

El Azul was apprehended during an October 14 operation in Celaya.
