Google searches for 'liquor store near me' hit an all time high last night as Americans watched the election results roll in. 

Google Trends posted their findings on Twitter Tuesday night accompanied by graphs showing a sharp upward trend of searches for liquor stores as Americans sought to soothe their election anxiety in a race which has been dubbed 'too close to call'.  

American searches for fast food and 'move to Canada' also skyrocketed. 

Google Trends reported most searches for liquor stores originated in Delaware, followed by Maryland, Tennessee, and Georgia. 

The seemingly least anxious states were Hawaii, Maine, Nebraska, and Iowa.

Other popular search terms were 'liquor store open near me right now' and 'wine near me'. 

Searches for 'anxiety' broke a previous record on Tuesday, suggesting Americans are having a hard time keeping calm as the election comes down to the wire. 

The search engine's findings prompted Google to advise its users to check in with their family and friends. 

The election now hinges on results which are certain to take well into Wednesday and probably even longer to be determined.

The outcome of the election had effectively ground to a halt just after midnight with Donald Trump on 213 electoral college votes and Joe Biden on 224, and seven battleground states too close to call.

Biden's failure to land a knockout blow by taking Florida, Ohio or Texas means that the race comes down to Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin – the 'blue wall' which Hillary Clinton lost in 2016.

But it will take days to determine the results from those states, setting the scene for a battle which was headed to the courts.
