James Anderson: I know I look pretty stupid, but it is emotional when you take a wicket

Looking back on some of my wicket-taking celebrations from the first Test in Dunedin has been an awkward experience.

My response to getting Ross Taylor out, for example. Quite frankly, what am I doing there?

Some people might view those moments and think, ‘What a prat!’, and to be honest, I fully understand.

Going overboard: James Anderson reacts to taking the wicket of Ross Taylor

But while I have gone a bit overboard on one or two occasions I would rather operate on that side of the emotional scale than react to each wicket as though it is a commonplace event.

It is not. I treasure every wicket I take for England and they are very hard to come by.

In the situation we were in, trying to bowl the team back into the game, there was a lot of pent-up emotion and frustration inside me.

When you are bowling you cannot allow that to boil over because it will impair your focus on what is in front of you. You must channel everything into where you are trying to bowl and what you are seeking to do with the ball.

Emotional: Anderson looks pumped after removing Peter Fulton

But add a couple of missed chances and not much progress and you can find yourself pumped fit to burst. Then, when you take a wicket, all that energy has to go somewhere.

Those celebrations are not like the ones you see in football, where players will spend as much time polishing goal celebrations as they do practising  free-kicks. There is nothing contrived about them. They are spontaneous, raw and a very necessary release.

And they are definitely not aimed at the batsman.

Judging by the message tweeted to me by my England mate Chris Tremlett, ‘Loving the wicket celebrations you angry man. GRRRR!’ it is clear that other bowlers, at least, know where all that emotion is coming from.

Pumped up: Anderson also dismissed Dean Brownlie to complete his four-wicket haul

Bowlers need that competitive edge to perform at the highest level. It is my job to take wickets, but it is also my passion. So when they do not come it hurts.

Sometimes that boils over, like it did the other day. In my defence, a noise like I made would get drowned out in a stadium holding 40,000, but in a small ground like Dunedin it is just out there.

Apologies for possibly overstepping the line. In all honesty, though, I can’t say it won’t happen again.
