Punched Kidderminster player hits out at Stockport fans as supporter is charged

The Kidderminster Harriers player who was punched by a Stockport County supporter during Saturday's Blue Square Premier match has branded their fans a 'disgrace' and called for the club to suffer a second relegation this season.

Defender Lee Vaughan spoke out angri ly against those visiting fans who encroached on to the pitch.

Kidderminster's 4-0 victory had ramifications for both clubs, as the home team won but failed to leapfrog Mansfield at the top of the table while Stockport were relegated to the sixth tier of English football.

Peacemaker: Stockport's Alex Kenyon pleads with fans to calm down

Trouble flared after Anthony Malbon gave Harriers the lead six minutes into the second half. The evening turned ugly when Stockport skipper Sean Newton went to take a throw-in, near a section of his own supporters.

He was seen remonstrating with them and Vaughan went over to calm the situation before a mob invaded the pitch, with one striking the right back.

Vaughan said: 'I pulled one of the Stockport players away and a lad came on and hit me from behind. Their fans are an absolute disgrace.

'I'm pleased they are going down and I hope they go down again. My son was here today and he had to witness that. 'Coming on to the pitch and assaulting someone oversteps the mark and when my kids and family are here, it's not nice.'

The fracas has once again put football supporters under the spotlight. It is only a week since Millwall fans fought at Wembley during the FA Cup semi-final against Wigan Athletic and Newcastle supporters went on the rampage in the city centre after a 3-0 home defeat in the Tyne-Wear derby.

Clash: Stewards struggle to contain the Stockport fans

The Football Association are waiting for the report from referee Michael Bull who suspended the game for 31 minutes while order was restored.

The authorities also had a crowd control adviser at the game. An investigation is inevitable. Around 1,300 Stockport fans travelled to Worcestershire for a 5.15pm kick-off.

Although there was a police presence in the streets, no officers were in the ground, despite the combustible nature of the fixture. It was left to the club's stewards to restore calm.

When the police eventually arrived, 20 minutes after the melee, the remainder of the 6,400 crowd applauded.

Kidderminster supporter Peter Lewis said: 'There was a group of around 50-100 Stockport fans standing on their seats. I turned to my father within 10 minutes of the kick-off and said that there would be an incident.

But it was shocking to see one of our players attacked by a member of the crowd. I have to say the vast majority of the Stockport supporters behaved impeccably.

'I thought it was surprising that there weren't any police inside the ground. I noticed they were out in numbers in the streets outside. I felt sorry for the stewards who did a good job in the circumstances.'

The match had not been made all-ticket, and supporters were allowed to pay on the day to gain entrance, a situation that only exacerbated the problem.

West Mercia Police arrested a man in his 20s on Saturday night on suspicion of assault. He was later charged and released on bail to appear at Kidderminster magistrates' court on May 9.
