Millwall 1 Blackburn 2: Shittu red card leaves Lions with 10 men

Jordan Rhodes gave Blackburn’s survival hopes a huge boost last night with a controversial late penalty.

Millwall striker Rob Hulse scored an own goal to cancel out team-mate Karleigh Osborne’s early opener as both sides fought for their Championship lives. But the visitors were awarded a dubious spot kick in the 77th minute when Danny Shittu was adjudged to have tripped Grant Hanley, and Rhodes slotted home.

Latest Championship table and results

The win takes Blackburn a point ahead of Millwall and five points clear of the drop zone. The hosts took a 14th-minute lead when Blackburn failed to deal with James Henry’s free-kick, and Osborne neatly finished past Grzegorz Sandomierski for his first goal since March 2011.

Blackburn caretaker boss Gary Bowyer was forced into an early substitution shortly afterwards, and Scotland striker David Goodwillie — replacing the limping Colin Kazim-Richards — helped the visitors up the tempo.

First, Lee Williamson fired over after Millwall could not clear Hanley’s cross. Then, in the 37th minute, David Dunn made one of his trademark breaks from midfield but as Millwall’s back four parted, he blazed wildly over.

David Jones forced David Forde into a brilliant save on the stroke of half-time as the Lions keeper tipped over a 25-yard effort that was bound for the top corner. Bowyer’s side were well on top going into half-time.

After the break, it was Jones again who worked Forde with a blistering half-volley from the edge of the box that the keeper turned away for a corner. And Rovers grabbed a deserved leveller 11 minutes into the second period, when Hulse bundled the impressive Jones’ inswinging corner into his own net.

Moments later Dunn’s sweet low strike was well saved by Forde as Blackburn piled on the pressure. Millwall were then left livid when referee Gavin Ward pointed to the spot when Hanley fell under what seemed minimal contact from Shittu. Rhodes did the rest.

CHAMPIONSHIP TABLE

After the game, Millwall boss Kenny Jackett accused referee Gavin Ward of costing his side a valuable point in their bid to steer clear of the relegation zone.

Jackett said: "That decision has cost us.I've just seen it again and it looked like a soft decision, in my opinion the referee got it wrong, it didn't look like there was any contact.

'I was looking for the refereeing team to make the right call as it looked soft at the time, and having seen it again it was.'

Shittu's protests at the final whistle earned him a red card and Jackett added: 'Danny's very upset, but I have to back my player.

'He's a passionate man and he felt very passionately that there was no contact. Unfortunately it was a second yellow which we cannot appeal."

Rovers caretaker boss Gary Bowyer had not seen the incident again but said: 'I thought it was a great run from Hanley, he deserves credit for that, and from where I stood I jumped up because I thought it was a penalty.

'I don't think we should be talking about that, we should be talking about our second-half performance and how brave my players were. Some you get, some you don't.'

Victory leaves Blackburn five points clear of the relegation zone with two games to play.

But Bowyer added: 'Are we safe? No. It's crazy with 56 points but, no, we aren't.'

The Lions are a point worse off, but with a game in hand, and Jackett said: 'There needs to be a big effort from everybody at Millwall to get over that line.'
