Bennett charged by FA after threatening to 'finish' Norwich fans in Twitter rant

Norwich defender Ryan Bennett has been charged with misconduct by the Football Association over comments made on Twitter.

Bennett closed his Twitter account on Tuesday night after threatening to ‘finish’ two fans who abused him on the social networking site.

Bennett, 23, responded to the Arsenal fans’ jibes after the Gunners’ 3-1 win over Norwich by tweeting: ‘If ya got a prob I’ll finish you in a couple of seconds.’

Heated exchange: Ryan Bennett closed his Twitter account and was disciplined by Norwich

BENNETT'S TWEETS

'Listen how about stop being a melon n shhh if ya got a prob I’ll finish you in a couple of seconds.'

'Officially going to delete twitter! Seems you can't say what you want on here, public can say why they want bit seems I can't reply!'

The Barclays Premier League club last night issued a statement saying the England Under 21 international had been the 'subject of internal disciplinary procedures' in wake of the posts, which have now resulted in formal action from the governing body.

In a statement, the FA said: 'Ryan Bennett has breached FA Rule E3 - use of abusive and/or insulting and/or threatening words in comments posted on a Twitter account. He has until 4pm on Friday 26 April to respond to the charge.'

On Tuesday night, after being disciplined by Norwich and reported to the FA, he tweeted: ‘Officially going to delete Twitter! Seems you can’t say what you want on here.’

A Norwich statement read: ‘Ryan Bennett has been the subject of internal disciplinary procedures following remarks made on the social media service Twitter.

‘The club are waiting for further communication from the Football Association regarding any possible formal charge from them.’

Meanwhile, Norwich boss Chris Hughton is wary of Wigan performing another great escape.

The Canaries' 2-1 win over Reading took them to 38 points with four games remaining - seven clear of the 18th-placed Latics, who have a game in hand.

But Hughton appears to believe Roberto Martinez's side are capable of a repeat of their spring survival acts of recent seasons and thinks his team need to add to their current 38-point haul.

'I think it (safe total) will be more than that,' Hughton said. 'If you look at the team that is furthest away from us, apart from QPR and Reading, it is Wigan.

'They have a game in hand. It is about possibly what they can do. When you look at these teams, they are capable of winning games.

'All the teams around are capable of winning games. The simple answer is I don't know, but I think it will certainly be around that 40-mark.'
