Football's Golden Years: Inside the dressing room - Milk in the FA Cup



There's still something a little mysterious about the dressing room, particularly at the highest level.

In this latest feature in our Golden Years series we've searched the archives to bring you a fine selection of images from that often hallowed sanctuary.

There's Tottenham stars drinking milk from the FA Cup trophy, Bournemouth players celebrating in the bath, and others simply getting ready for a match.


Some of the most famous names in the game's history are here, along with some of football's lesser lights.

One of England's most famous ever matches came at the semi-final stage of the 1990 World Cup, the titanic clash with West Germany in Turin. Before all that tumultuous drama, here is the scene of England's dressing room before the arrival of the team. The shirts here belong to John Barnes, Gary Lineker, Chris Waddle, Steve McMahon, Paul Gascoigne, Terry Butcher, Mark Wright, Des Walker, Stuart Pearce, Paul Parker, and Peter Shilton




Nat Lofthouse is seen here being given a drink from the FA Cup trophy by Bolton manager Bill Ridding after the 1958 final at Wembley. Lofthouse scored both goals for Bolton in their 2-0 win against Manchester United. Bolton's opponents were still in mourning, with the tragic Munich Air Disaster having taken place just three months before. Four survivors from the crash played for United in the Final - Sir Bobby Charlton, Harry Gregg, Dennis Viollet and Bill Foulkes





Look at the delight of Liverpool goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar and defender Glenn Hysen following the club's 1990 title success. It seemed at that time that Liverpool would go on dominating English football for many more years - but they haven't won the league title in the 23 years since

Icon Bremner scored the winner for Leeds in a 1-0 win, after the first two games had finished 0-0. Leeds lost in the Final, however, to Chelsea after another replay

Milk in the FA Cup trophy, a tradition seemingly lost in the modern era. Here, Tottenham pair Frank Saul and Dave Mackay celebrate after the 2-1 win against Chelsea in the 1967 Final. Goals from Jimmy Robertson and Saul gave Spurs their third FA Cup success in seven seasons




Graeme Souness gets the celebrations started here. The then-Rangers boss and goalkeeper Chris Woods toast the club's 1990 SPL title success in the dressing room. Rangers were a dominant force in Scottish football at the time, winning nine league titles in a row until Celtic finally broke their amazing run in 1997-98




Tooting & Mitcham forward Paddy Hasty receives a hug from his father after he scored the winner in a 2-1 FA Cup second round win over Northampton in 1958. Northern Irishman Hasty played for the Great Britain football team at the 1960 Rome Olympics - the last time Britain entered a team at the Olympics until last year's London Games

Two all-time legends of the game here, with then-Celtic manager Jock Stein and striker Kenny Dalglish celebrating the club's Scottish title success in 1977. Dalglish, who is on the Coca Cola here, left for Liverpool soon after, and a year later he scored the winning goal in a memorable 1-0 European Cup Final win for the Merseysiders against Bruges at Wembley



Sir Stanley Matthews is seen here after his testimonial match for Stoke against a World Stars XI in 1965. Hero Matthews retired from the game at the age of 50, having played at Stoke for 19 years, in two spells. He was also with Blackpool for 14 years. Matthews played 54 times for England, a figure that would have been far higher were it not for World War Two






Headington United manager Harry Thompson gathers his squad around the tactics board, issuing instructions to Ben Duncan, Dennis Maskell, John Crichton, Bob Peart, Jim Smith and Ken Smith before an FA Cup fourth round clash with Bolton, a game Wanderers won 4-2. Headington changed their name to Oxford United in 1960. It has been a dramatic half century for Oxford since, a period which has included spells in the top flight and non-league football




Tommy Lawton tries on a Russian fur hat in the Arsenal dressing room, with Alex Forbes, Walley Barnes and Jack Kelsey seeing the funny side, before a trip to Russia for the Gunners to face Dynamo Moscow in a special friendly match in 1954. Prolific striker Lawton enjoyed a fine 20-year career, with this being his final season. Arsenal players weren't quite so jolly when they eventually arrived in Russia - Dynamo played them off the park and won 5-0




Think of some of the game's greats that will have spent time in these baths at Wembley - this picture of the dressing rooms at the old stadium was taken just before the 1948 Olympic Games in London



Chelsea's Roy Bentley bandages his shin as team-mate Ken Armstrong reads the match programme in the changing room before kick off of a friendly clash with Hayes in 1955. It was an historic year for the Blues, with the club winning their first league title. They had to wait 50 years for their next success in the league, with Jose Mourinho guiding the Blues to the Premier League title in 2005





One of the most famous English footballers of all time pictured here, Kevin Keegan, during his time with Hamburg in 1977. Keegan joined the German club from Liverpool that year. Over the next two seasons, he was named European Footballer of the Year on successive occasions

Arsenal goalkeeper Paul Barron preparing for a rare appearance here in 1979. Barron could hardly get a look-in during his time with the Gunners, with the great Pat Jennings first choice. Barron later played for a host of clubs after his time with Arsenal, including Crystal Palace and West Bromwich Albion







Fulham chairman Tommy Trinder hugs goalkeeper Peter Mellor in the dressing room at Maine Road after a dramatic 1-0 win for the Cottagers in the FA Cup semi-final replay against Birmingham in 1975. Mellor spent five years with Fulham, making 190 appearances. Trinder was one of the most recognisable characters in British showbusiness, having spent decades working in television and radio. Those from certain generations will remember his famous catchphrase: 'You lucky people'.




West Brom pair Laurie Cunningham and Cyrille Regis unwind in the dressing room after Albion's UEFA Cup clash with Valencia in Spain in 1978. A 1-1 draw for West Brom was followed by a 2-0 win at The Hawthorns, which put the Baggies through to the last eight. Cunningham left Albion the following summer for a five-year spell at Real Madrid, but Regis stayed with the Midlands club until 1984

You might recognise the person at the centre of this little lot... Sir Alex Ferguson - then Aberdeen boss - is surrounded by his celebrating players after the Dons won the Scottish title in 1980. It was Ferguson's first major trophy as manager, aged 38. Now 71, he is set to lead his Manchester United side to their 20th league title
