Girl, 5, is rescued by neighbors after yelling for help and banging on the windows after being 'kidnapped by monster' who lived across from her apartment where cops found her father dead

A five-year-old girl was rescued from her kidnapper, whom she called 'a monster,' after several days in captivity inside his Detroit apartment when a neighbor saw the child banging on a window and calling for help.

The abduction of Maggie Millsap in late June took an even more sinister turn when police who arrived to take her to safety on June 30 discovered her father dead inside his apartment.

The family's next-door neighbor, Dangelo Clemons, 30, was arrested on counts of kidnapping and child enticement. So far, he has not been charged in connection with the death of Maggie's father, who was identified by neighbors as Colby Millsap.

People who knew the family revealed in social media posts that Millsap was raising his daughter on his own after the child's mother succumbed to cancer a few years ago.

The father and daughter shared an apartment on the right side of a duplex in the 12100 block of Schaefer Highway. Clemons, the accused kidnapper, lived in the unit on the left side of the building.

On June 30, the Millsaps' neighbor and babysitter, Raynell Jones, said she saw Maggie in the window of Clemons' apartment, banging on the glass and screaming for help.

'She goes, "Help me, help me please,"' Jones told Fox 2. 'When the guy walks back up she says, "The monster is back," and then she closes the curtain.'

Jones called 911 and summoned police. While waiting for officers to arrive, Jones and other neighbors went up to Clemons' apartment and told him to let Maggie go, but he reportedly shut the door on them.

Officers responded to the scene just before 10.30pm and went up to Clemons' duplex.

According to reporting by The Washington Post, the suspect initially slammed the door on the officers, but they forced their way inside and took him into custody.

During the investigation, police entered Millsap's unit and found a man dead in the living room. Authorities have not yet formally identified the deceased, but neighbors said it was Maggie's father.

Officers removed Maggie from Clemons' apartment and transported her to the hospital. Cellphone video shows the 5-year-old talking to a female officer on the scene.

'Do you know what I want to be when I grow up?' Maggie is heard asking the cop carrying her to safety. 'I want to be a policeman.'

Detroit police detective James Kraszewski said it does not appear that Maggie was physically or sexually abused during her captivity.

Kraszewski, who grew visibly emotional talking about this case, praised the neighbors for jumping into action to save Maggie.

'They put their own lives in jeopardy to try to save that girl,' he told the Detroit Free Press. 'If it hadn't been for them, God knows what could have happened to that little girl.'

Police have not disclosed a motive behind the child's kidnapping, or her father's death.

Maggie, now an orphan, currently remains in foster care. She is said to have some family in Texas.

The child's kidnapping and her father's death occurred just days after another person was shot to death outside the same Detroit duplex, but it is unclear at this time if the incidents were connected.

Clemons was arraigned on the kidnapping and enticement charges on July 3 and had his bond set at $250,000. He is due back in court on August 18.

'All allegations like these that confirm why we all do this challenging work. We must protect our children by all lawful means necessary,' Detroit Prosecutor Kym Worthy said in a statement.

Online records indicate that Clemons has a prior criminal history that includes a 2010 conviction on a charge of armed robbery. He was released from prison in 2013 after serving less than three years.

Maggie's godmother, Karla Reeves, told WDIV she wants Clemons held accountable for his actions.

'He needs to know that he hurt this little girl for the rest of her life,' she said.
