Sydney's Covid cluster spreads and lockdown continues: Your two-minute guide to the latest on coronavirus as Christmas plans hang in the balance

New South Wales is desperately trying to salvage its Christmas as states and territories rush to impose travel restrictions on Sydney's growing coronavirus threat.

After record testing, 15 new cases were found in the 24 hours to 8pm Sunday bringing the total infected in the latest Northern Beaches outbreak to 83, NSW Health said on Monday.

There are 79 venues listed as of Monday morning where people who were there on the wrong time or day must now get tested and isolate themselves for fear of catching the virus.

Many are pubs and cafes and RSL clubs, restaurants, gyms, nail salons and cafes.

Bunnings at Belrose in Sydney's northern beaches is a new venue on the list. Get tested at if you were there on December 17 from 4pm to 5pm, and isolate yourself

More worryingly, some are outside the Northern Beaches: Cronulla Mall, Bondi Junction Westfield, Darling Point, Double Bay, Redfern, Paddington, Riverwood, Sydney CBD - the list keeps growing.

Long queues ensnared motorists at Covid-19 testing stations from the Northern Beaches to Bondi in the city's east.

Alerts have also been issued for people who travelled on a total of 24 public transport routes including bus, train and ferry across Greater Sydney at various times and dates.

Leading epidemiologist Mary-Louise McLaws told ABC News that health authorities are monitoring the situation hourly and will be concerned if infections spread throughout Sydney.

'The horse may have already bolted if the greater community has begun seeding and creating secondary generations,' she said.

Here's the latest on the pandemic in Australia.

The possibly dire results of the record-breaking amount of tests won't be known until at least Tuesday, meaning Monday's relatively low case numbers could be a result of less tests

* The report effectively cleared Premier Daniel Andrews, former health minister Jenny Mikakos and senior ministers Martin Pakula and Lisa Neville, finding the decision to hire guards was not made at a ministerial level.

* After the report's release, one victim's family announced they would pursue a class action, despite an apology from Premier Daniel Andrews.

* Northern Beaches residents are not to leave their homes unless they qualify for one of four key reasons: shopping for essentials, travel for work or education (if they can't do it from home), exercise, medical or compassionate grounds.
