Cop who joined local gang of thieves is arrested for the murder of a retired army general in Colombia

A police officer has been arrested in connection to the deadly mugging of a retired army general in Colombia.

Authorities in the capital of Bogotá apprehended Harrison González during the middle of his patrol shift on Friday in the community of Cerro El Cable.

Surveillance video made public by Colombia's Attorney General reveals the moment González fired fired several shots at Miller Cortés, 58, on December 10 in the Bogotá town of Envigatá.

The footage shows González stepping out of a vehicle driven by an alleged accomplice and walking down a street before he intercepted Cortés.

The disgraced cop is seen in the video reaching to grab an envelope with $2,857. However, Cortés resisted González efforts before the off-duty cop shot the retiree and snatched the envelope.

González then hopped on the back of a getaway motorcycle and fled the shooting scene.

A separate video released by Colombia's Attorney General showed Cortés' wife had been marked by González's gang members after she visited a banking center where she withdrew money. Cortés later drove to a local store and was waiting for his wife to return.

González would show up moments later before he walked up to Cortés car and shot him. Cortés was rushed to Santa Gracia Clinic where he died after undergoing an operation to remove the bullets.

Noticias Caracol reported that González moonlighted as a member of a local gang known as 'Los de Harry' and that he had been transferred from his previous unit after he was arrested for his alleged participation in a series of fake raids that ended in robberies.

The Attorney General's Office charged González with aggravated homicide, aggravated and qualified robbery, and possession of firearms. 

González, who appeared before a judge Saturday and denied his role in Cortés' murder, could face up to 40 years in prison if convicted.
