French international: Toon's Hatem Ben Arfa
A Premier League footballer has appeared in court accused of speeding at 110 mph.
Injured Newcastle United star Hatem Ben Arfa was ordered to appear before magistrates on four driving offences. The French international was allegedly clocked at 110 mph in his Mercedes on a 70 mph stretch of the A696 Woolsington bypass on the outskirts of city in September. When police pulled him over, it is alleged that he was also found to be driving with no insurance. Five days later, on September 11 last year, the midfielder was stopped in a Volkswagen Golf, when he was again said to be driving with no insurance and vehicle incorrectly registered. He denied driving with no insurance the second time he was stopped, in Gosforth, Newcastle. But he did not enter pleas to the other allegations against him. His solicitor Michelle Brown explained Ben Arfa had been unaware of the charges of speeding, and the driving the Mercedes with no insurance, prior to arrival in court. She said: “It seems there are two sets of proceedings here but I have to confess, I am only aware of one. "We knew about the no insurance and the failing to register a vehicle from September 11. “It is not a straightforward situation because it is our application that he did have insurance as he had an international Green Card. "He was not the keeper of the Volkswagen and the car was only in the country for a short period of time. “We have some French statements with regard to this, which need to be interpreted into English for the prosecution. "I would ask for an adjournment and, in the interim, we can look at the speeding offence and the other no insurance offence.” She added: “He has a French driving licence but the Green Card is for third party insurance on a foreign-registered vehicle in the UK.” he Toon star, who is out for the rest of the season due to a hamstring injury, told the court he may be in France for treatment at the time of his next planned appearance next month. Speaking through an interpreter, he said: “Excuse me, I have a wound. I might be in Paris.”
