Meryl Streep tipped to beat Michelle Williams to Best Actress at the 84th Academy Awards
Michelle well looked like Marilyn in her latest film. The critics thought so too.
A nice old man and Jennifer Lawrence have just announced the nominations for this year’s Oscars 2012.
Meryl Streep has landed a nomination for Best Actress for her
performance as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady and is up against
Michelle Williams for her role in My Week With Marilyn.
Williams has been nominated for a second year in a row – her
performance in Blue Valentine lost out to Natalie Portman’s in Black
Swan last year – and it’s thought she could have more luck this year.
Saying that, Streep has been up a record 16 times and the critics (i.e.
people who go to the cinema and, like, really enjoy it) reckon she will
take it. Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady (Pic: Alex Bailey)Britons Gary Oldman, Kenneth Branagh and Janet McTeer are also in the
running for Academy Awards. Oldman is up for Best Actor for his role as
George Smiley in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and it is his first Oscar
nomination (high five for him).
Branagh, 51, is in the running for best supporting actor for his
performance as Sir Laurence Olivier in Marilyn Monroe biopic My Week
With Marilyn. He said today: "It was a rare honour to play Sir Laurence
Olivier. To be recognised by the Academy for doing so is overwhelming.
I'm absolutely thrilled."
Black and white silent film The Artist has 10 nominations, including
best film, best actor for French star Jean Dujardin and supporting
actress for Berenice Bejo. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy: Gary OldmanBut Martin Scorsese's family film Hugo leads with 11 nominations.
War Horse, based on the National Theatre play inspired by Michael
Morpurgo's novel, is up for six gongs, and is also among the movies
vying for best film. Uggie the dog featured in the film "The Artist"As well as The Artist, Steven Spielberg's War Horse is up against The

Now, we could go through the list of the nominations for the 84th
Academy Awards and tell you who we think will win, but those nifty
bookie types at William Hill have got more of an idea than we do. See
below for all of the Oscar nominations - in the order of who is already
tipped to win.
Britain's most famous aristocratic supermodel Stella Tennant has died at the age of 50, just months after splitting from her husband. Her family praised her as a 'wonderful woman and an inspiration to us all' in a statement which confirmed her 'sudden death' yesterday. In August it was revealed Mrs Tennant had separated from her husband David Lasnet after 21 years of marriage earlier this year. The couple owned a property empire that includes a luxury mews house in Edinburgh and a stately home near her father's estate. Mrs Tennant was the granddaughter of Andrew Cavendish, the 11th Duke of Devonshire and Deborah Mitford, one of the well-known aristocratic siblings. The mother-of-four was known for her androgynous looks during her 1990s modelling heyday and soon became a muse for Karl Lagerfeld, which the fashion designer attributed to her resemblance to Coco Chanel.
