Frail Margaret Thatcher was recovering tonight after having emergency surgery to remove a growth from her bladder.The former Prime Minister, 87, is still in a London hospital following today’s operation and might not return home until after Christmas Day.Daughter Carol was by her mother’s bedside tonight following the latest health scare for the Tory icon.Maggie’s friend and former adviser Lord Tim Bell said: “The operation was completely satisfactory. She is tough. The doctors are happy.”The surgery was described as a “minimal invasive” procedure.Although it is not understood to be complicated, it would have involved a general anaesthetic.It is the latest health scare for Baroness Thatcher, who was in office from 1979 to 1990.In early 2008, the “Iron Lady” suffered from a series of mini-strokes but was discharged from hospital with a clean bill of health.She made a rare public appearance at former Defence Secretary Liam Fox’s 50th birthday party in September 2011.Thatcher was bitterly disappointed at having to cancel her planned attendance of a statue honouring Ronald Reagan two months earlier.She was also not well enough to join the Queen for a lunch with former and serving Prime Ministers as part of the Diamond Jubilee this summer.And two years ago she missed an 85th birthday party thrown for her by Prime Minister David Cameron at No10 Downing Street.Lady Thatcher was one of the most divisive Prime Ministers in British history.She is hero worshipped by the right but her legacy in office was a divided nation and her brutal economic policies devastated many parts of the country, particularly its industrial heartlands.
