At least 68 people were shot, and a four-year-old boy killed, during bloody Labor Day weekend in Democrat-run cities across the country.

In Chicago alone, where four-year-old Mychal Moultry Jr. died after being shot in his bed, 58 people were gunned down.

Moultry Jr. was sleeping at his father's home on the 6500 block of South Ellis around 9 pm Friday night when he was struck twice in the head by gunfire that came through the window from outside the residence, according to NBC Chicago.

A spate of attacks also erupted in Washington D.C. and New York City, where a cab driver was gunned down by a 15-year-old boy in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Overall, murders have increased 16 percent across most major U.S. cities, which are dominantly governed by democrats, so far in 2021 compared to 2020, according to a new report published by Fox News.

The 24 cities included Omaha, St. Petersburg, Riverside, Louisville, Denver, Nashville, Austin, Los Angeles, Memphis, Chicago, New York, Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Houston, Atlanta, Seattle, Norfolk, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Baltimore, Raleigh, Washington D.C. and Milwaukee.

Overall, 21 of 24 cities reported increases in homicide rates. Portland aside, some of the largest percentage increases were in smaller cities with very small homicide counts like in Omaha, St Petersburg and Riverside.

But cities with histories of much larger numbers of homicides also experienced pronounced percentage increases.

Chicago added 33 murders to its first-quarter 2020 total of 102, representing an increase of 32 percent.

Los Angeles added 25 homicides in the first quarter of 2021, a 37 percent increase.

Not surprisingly, big cities contributed disproportionately to the overall increase in homicide victims.

The three largest cities (New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago) accounted for 39 percent of the 193 additional people killed in the first quarter of 2021.

While the report doesn't mention the factors taken into consideration for its findings, the recent rise in violent crime rates requires an urgent response from city, state, and federal leaders.

There have been straddling calls from within the Democrats to 'defund the police' while President Biden has previously said that he wouldn't shy away from tacking the gun lobby directly.

'No one needs to have a weapon that can fire over 30, 40, 50, even up to 100 rounds,' he said, 'unless you think the deer are wearing Kevlar vests, or something.'

Biden has promised to crackdown on firearms dealers but will also let states and cities use $350 billion in COVID relief to hire more cops amid surging violent crime.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio seized on the fatal shooting of a 10-year-old boy in June to call for stricter federal gun control and to push for state legislation that would provide more assistance to parolees.

Meanwhile, over Labor Day weekend, seven people in the Bronx in New York City, sustained gunshot wounds in separate shootings in the space of a few hours. It is unclear if these shootings were related.

Four of those injured were shot outside of a catering hall at 3.35am on Sunday.

Things got heated when the group of seven reportedly got into an argument with a person they didn't know, who then started firing at them.

Moultry Jr. was sleeping at his father's home on the 6500 block of South Ellis around 9pm Friday night when he was struck twice in the head by gunfire that came through the window from outside the residence, according to NBC Chicago.

The youngster was taken in critical condition to Comer Children's Hospital, and was declared dead two days later, on Sunday, a Chicago Fire Department spokesman told the news outlet.

A motive for the killing remains unclear, as is whether or not the child and his father were the intended targets of the shooting.

Elsewhere in the city, seven other children were among those injured in shootings over the holiday weekend, outraging residents citywide.

Among those seven children, two siblings, a 12-year-old boy and 15-year-old girl, were shot while attending a back-to-school picnic near an East Garfield Park gas station on Saturday, NBC Chicago reports.

Ahead of announcing crime statistics in Chicago for the month of August, police officials described 'a challenging time across the city,' with 78 murders, or 22 percent more, for the month compared to August 2020.

The city saw a 3 percent uptick in murders year-to-date compared to the past year.

'We're sick and tired everyday,' said an activist with anti-crime group All Kids Matter.

'We're staking this hospital out night after night. All these children get shot throughout Chicago.'

The boy was struck in the head and was rushed to Comer Children's Hospital in serious condition.

Another community activist, Andrew Holmes, expressed his frustration in the number of children who have been shot in recent days, citing the need for more parental oversight and elected official intervention.

'If you know you got some children, some teenage, some grown adults, and they're doing wrong on the streets then it's up to you to...step to them and put them in line,' Holmes said.

At least 280 children and teens have been shot in Chicago so far this year, with 35 of them suffering fatal gunshot wounds, according to ABC 7 Chicago.

And as the summer winds down, Chicago is on pace to have its highest yearly murder tally in 25 years.

According to CPD figures, there has been 524 murders this year as of September 1st, which is a three percent increase compared to date last year, with 2020 still seeing massive gun violence across cities nationwide following the pandemic's onset and protests sparked by George Floyd's killing by Minneapolis police, according to WBEZ.

The city is already on track to outpace the year 1996, when murders in Chicago totaled 796.

As of early Monday morning, there have been no arrests in either of the three aforementioned shootings.

However, police made at least one arrest after a man shot a CTA bus driver on Saturday night, after the 34-year-old victim was shot in the jaw and transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious condition, the outlet reports.
