larry could cause 'life-threatening rip current and surf conditions' along the east coast even though it is unlikely to hit the us

Just as the Northeast recovers from the record-setting rainfall caused by Hurricane Ida last week, another named hurricane is forecasted to bring dangerous conditions to East Coast beaches.

Hurricane Larry is a Category 3 storm that was 1,015 miles southeast of Bermuda and 715 miles east-northwest of the Leeward Islands as of Monday morning.

It is predicted to cause 'life-threatening' rip-tides and surf conditions in the Northeast this week.

The storm, which is unlikely to hit US soil, is set to tear through the Greater Antilles, the Bahamas and Bermuda today through Tuesday as the Northeast recovers from record-setting rainfall brought on by Hurricane Ida last Wednesday.

'Significant swells' are slated to hit the East Coast and Canada's Atlantic coast by midweek, according to the National Hurricane Center, and beachgoers are should be cautious and follow the guidance of local officials as the storm develops.

As of Monday, the storm has sustained 120MPH winds - the organization said that hurricane-force winds are expected to extend 70 miles from the storm's center, while tropical-storm-force winds will reach up to 175 miles from the center.

In the coming days, Larry may bring heavy rainfall, strong winds and coastal flooding to Bermuda by mid-week. It will be the third major hurricane - Category 3 or higher - of the Atlantic season.

Last week, Hurricane Ida slammed into Louisiana on August 29 as a Category 4 hurricane with sustained winds of 150 mph. The latest death toll in the southern state rose to at least 13 people on Sunday.

The storm weakened as it moved north but still unleashed flash flooding on the East Coast that killed at least 50 more people, according to figures also updated Sunday.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecasters monitoring weather patterns said that the end of El Niño is allowing for above-normal hurricane activity.

The agency's Climate Prediction Center has predicted that the chances of an above-normal hurricane season are at 45 percent, an increase from the previous outlook of 30 percent.

The likelihood of near-typical hurricane activity, according to the CPC, is now at 35 percent, while the chance for below-normal activity has decreased to 20 percent.

The agency's number of predicted storms for this season has increased, too, with the NOAA now expecting ten to 17 named storms, with five to nine of those expected to become hurricanes.

President Joe Biden is scheduled to be in New Jersey and New York City on Tuesday to survey storm damage from Ida, according to the White House. He visited Louisiana on Friday before flying to his residence in Delaware for Labor Day.

Appearing Sunday at a New York City subway stop that sustained heavy flooding, Democratic New York Senator Chuck Schumer renewed the call for Congress to pass a bipartisan infrastructure bill and a reconciliation bill that would dedicate billions to improving flood resiliency and addressing the broader effects of climate change.

'Ida was yet another wake-up call for New York and a nation where too many are hitting the snooze button on big and bold change,' Schumer said at the 28th Street station. Videos showed rivers of water cascading from the street down onto the station's platform and tracks.

'Each of these hurricanes gets a name,' Schumer said. 'It´s time to make one for ourselves as a nation that can keep doing the big things and the hard work that saves the planet and grows our economy.'
