D'oh! Domino's pizza dough thrown out after Hurricane Ida expands in dumpster and becomes 'unstoppable blob'

As Louisiana began the clean up after Hurricane Ida last week, one Domino's Pizza franchise decided to throw out its left-over pizza dough.

But as temperatures ran into the 90s this week, the dough has rapidly expanded and turned into a growing, unstoppable blob at the franchise in Covington.

Local resident Nicole Amstutz first spotted the dough bubbling over the side of a large dumpster on Wednesday and posted a picture to Facebook.

By Saturday of the dough had broken free of the dumpster and begun spilling out onto the ground.

'Back in Covington, Dominos threw all of their dough in the dumpster and now it's growing into a giant, unstoppable blob,' she wrote.

In an update Saturday, she added: 'It's still there, but the dough inside fell and now there are boxes on top.'

Amstutz noted that the 'dough on the ground is squishy.'

It would appear that with the heat and humidity in Covington, the yeast in the dough caused it to expand.

Amstutz's post has since been shared more than 2,300 times, with one follower commenting, 'They didn’t bother to throw the toppings on it?'.

Another wrote: 'Somebody needs to call Ghost Busters!'

Amstutz, a self-described 'snacktion reporter,' according to Nola.com, said she is 'really just happy it's making so many people laugh at such a stressful time.'

The state had been slammed by Hurricane Ida, which made landfall on August 29 as a Category Four hurricane with 150 mph winds and torrential downpours.

More than one million people across Louisiana and Mississippi were left without electricity in its wake as temperatures soared, and the city of New Orleans went completely dark with hospitals and other emergency services operating off of generator power.

As of Monday, more than half a million in Louisiana were still without power, as widespread flooding continues.

The death toll from the storm has now reached 13 people in the state.

At least four of these deaths were associated with carbon monoxide poisoning as a result of generator power.

Now, the state is facing the threat of more flash flooding, as slow-moving rain and drenching thunderstorms move over the state.

The storms are capable of producing two to three inches of rain in a short period of time, according to Reuters, and were already saturating storm-ravaged New Orleans as well as other areas of Louisiana and Mississippi on Monday afternoon.

'Some of that will occur over soil that is saturated by Ida - areas that are already sensitive, with any additional heavy rain problematic and leading to flash flooding,' Lara Pagano, a National Weather Service meteorologist told the outlet.

President Joe Biden has already approved a disaster declaration for the state, which he visited on Friday.

The declaration qualifies Louisiana for federal assistance for repairs and rebuilding after the intense flooding, that also killed dozens of people in the northeast.
