Seattle Seahawks 'release' defensive end Aldon Smith four months after he was arrested for 'choking a man unconscious' near New Orleans

Four months after being arrested for allegedly choking a man unconscious at a New Orleans-area coffee shop, embattled Seattle Seahawks defensive end Aldon Smith has now reportedly been released from the team.

NFL Network's Mike Garafolo was the first to report the news. Team spokespeople did not immediately respond to DailyMail.com's email requesting confirmation.

Smith signed a one-year, $1.2 million contract with the Seahawks on April 15. Two days later, an arrest warrant was issued for Smith in Louisiana on a second-degree battery charge. He was accused of choking a man unconscious after an altercation in a coffee shop.

The 31-year-old made a strong comeback last season with the Dallas Cowboys after four years out of the league. He started all 16 games and recorded five sacks, 14 quarterback hits, 48 tackles and two fumble recoveries -- including one returned for a touchdown.

Smith was the No. 7 overall pick by San Francisco in 2011 and registered 33.5 sacks in his first 32 games with the 49ers, earning first-team All-Pro honors in 2012.

However, following a series of arrests and off-field issues, as well as multiple team and league suspensions, Smith was suspended by the NFL in November 2015. He wasn't reinstated until May of 2020.

Despite his recent arrest, Smith had been widely expected to contribute on the field this season. Now his release has ignited speculation around the team.

'Aldon Smith was in tremendous shape, and Pete Carroll said #Seahawks were going to give him every opportunity to succeed and change his career,' Tacoma News Tribune reporter Gregg Bell wrote on Twitter. 'Something obviously happened from there.'

'This does not appear to be about football,' tweeted ESPN's Brady Henderson.

Smith applied for reinstatement to the NFL in 2016, but that decision was initially deferred until the offseason and he never was granted reinstatement. In 2019, Missouri police stopped Smith for a traffic violation around midnight and arrested him shortly thereafter on suspicion of DUI. In March of 2017, police arrested Smith on allegations that he assaulted his fiancee and fled the scene before authorities could arrive. He turned himself in three days later and posted bond. The Oakland Raiders released him from their roster March 5, 2017, shortly after his arrest

Smith has 52.5 sacks and 103 quarterback hits in 75 games (53 starts) with the 49ers (2011-14), then-Oakland Raiders (2015) and Cowboys (2020).

According to a police press release in April, St. Bernard Parish sheriff's deputies responded to a call for medical assistance on Saturday in Meraux, Louisiana, where they found a man who claimed he was assaulted by Smith outside a business in nearby Chalmette. Both Meraux and Chalmette sit on the outskirts of New Orleans.

'On the evening of April 17, 2021 at the French Press Coffee House in Chalmette, Louisiana, Mr. Smith caused severe injuries to a male victim causing injuries that warranted a state court Judge to sign an arrest warrant,' a St. Bernard Parish district attorney's office news release stated Monday. 'The warrant was signed on April 18, 2021.'

He ultimately surrendered to police and was charged with second-degree battery.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell surprised many by lifting Smith's suspension in May of 2020 - five years after the fearsome pass rusher was first banned amid a string of alcohol-related arrests. Smith subsequently signed a one-year deal with the Cowboys, where he was reunited with Dallas defensive line coach Jim Tomsula, who also coached him in San Francisco.

Smith has had no fewer than four DUI arrests since being drafted by the 49ers in 2011, and was voluntarily placed in a treatment facility in 2013. He was also transferred to an inpatient rehab center following a domestic violence arrest in 2018. Smith was last arrested for drunk driving in 2019.

At the time of Smith's release in 2014, Tomsula stressed that he and the 49ers organization would continue to support Smith on his road to recovery and added a message to everyone else struggling with alcohol and drugs.

'What I would like to say is if one person out there reads this, and you're struggling, get help,' Tomsula said at the press conference. 'Go get it. You're worth it. You're worth it. There's value in every human being. Get the help. You don't have to walk alone.'
