'You have to give police back their authority': Trump tears into Democrat-led cities including New York and Chicago for helping fuel the surge in violence by ‘destroying’ law enforcement and revoking cash bail

Donald Trump said in an interview that aired Monday morning that in order to curb the nationwide spiking crime rate, police need to regain authority in liberal cities where these violent offenses are running rampant.

'Chicago, take a look at the numbers. They had 260 people shot on Fourth of July weekend. New York, through the roof,' Trump said of rising crime numbers in Democrat-run cities. 'Take a look at Los Angeles – what is going on in Los Angeles with the crime. And Oakland and Baltimore.'

'What you have to do is have to give the police back their authority,' he proposed while speaking to Fox News' Lawrence Jones at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Dallas, Texas on Sunday.

Democrats have tried to deflect the 'defund police' movement into Republicans, despite the progressive idea gaining steam with far-left factions last summer after the police killing of George Floyd.

The idea has become widely unpopular and has caused Democrats to walk back on their calls to defund law enforcement agencies and offices – especially as more liberal areas experience an unprecedented rise in violent crime.

'You know the police can stop this,' Trump said of curbing the rising crime in cities.

'The police are afraid they will lose everything if they go after somebody because some bad acts were done,' Trump said, likely alluding to the confrontations caught on camera between the public and law enforcement, including Floyd's death at the hands of former police officer Derek Cahuvin, who was given 22 years in prison.

'Because of those bad acts,' Trump continued, 'they have destroyed these police forces.'

'It's been happening for years even before defund the police,' Jones said.

The former president responded: 'That's right.'

Closing out CPAC as the headline speaker on Sunday evening, Trump bashed Democrats for trying to blame the GOP for the defund police movement and rising crime rates.

Shooting and murder rates are up in New York City, according to the NYPD

'The Democrats know their policies on crime are so unpopular, so radical, and so crazy, they are now trying to pretend they never led the de-fund the police movement in the first place. But everyone knows this is an outrageous lie,' he said to a cheering crowd of supporters.

FBI numbers show that murders are up nearly 25 per cent.

President Joe Biden has insisted that the rising crime rate is due to gun laws in the U.S., and is pushing for more restrictions to Americans' Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms.

On Monday afternoon, the president will meet with local elected leaders and law enforcement officials to discuss the White House's strategy to reduce gun crimes.

Included in that meeting will be the mayors of D.C. and San Jose, California as well as Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, who is running for mayor in New York City. The Police Chiefs of the Memphis, Chicago, Wilmington and Newark police departments will also attend the meeting.

Trump says the issue isn't gun rights, but Democratic policies in America's biggest cities.

'They have been Democrat for 100 years,' he said of elected officials in cities. 'You look at New York and Chicago and some of these cities, they have been democrat-run and badly run for 100 years.'

'I mean, it's the way it is,' Trump said, adding 'it's almost like a habit – you put a Democrat in.'

The ex-president didn't seem optimistic that Republicans can take more local leadership seats in Democrat-run cities in the 2022 elections.
