A top-of-the range electric-powered Tesla that was used by Prince Charles has gone on the market.

The six-month-old Tesla Model S with just 7,000 miles on the clock is on the market for £82,500 with no special premium added for its Royal pedigree.

It is believed that it was loaned by Tesla to Charles’ household to try out as an environmentally form of transport in addition to his electric Jaguar I-Pace.

Charles who has long been known for his green views was seen being chauffeured around several times in the midnight silver coloured motor which has a top speed of 155mph.

It is believed that he loved the car so much that he got the loan period extended before handing it back to Tesla.

The car which has a range of 405 miles, and can accelerate from 0-60mph in just 3.1 seconds was recently bought by webuysupercars.com.

It is now being sold by luxury car dealers Castle Motors who only refer in the small print on their website to it having been used by Charles.

The car is expected to be snapped up soon because anyone ordering a new Tesla Model S in the UK today is not expected to get delivery until the end of next year.

It has come on the market less than two months after a Ford Escort Ghia 1.6 saloon bought by Charles as an engagement present for Princess Diana was sold at auction for £52,640.

A Range Rover used by Prince William and wife Kate was also auctioned in May for £50,625 - more than £10,000 over its pre-sale estimate and double its value without a Royal link.

Dale Flood, a director of Castle Motors based in Liskeard, Cornwall, described the Tesla Model S as ‘a phenomenal piece of kit.’

He added: ‘We have sold quite a few cars belonging to celebrities in the past, but not so many which have been used by the Royal family.

‘I have been told that Prince Charles used it from new. It has an exceptionally long range for an electric vehicle. We are a family business that has been going for 48 years and we are always keen to sell interesting cars.

‘We have not increased the price because of its Royal connections. In fact, we didn’t even mention that it had a Royal link when we first put it on our website, but then we decided to mention it very briefly.’

Phil Corker, the head of purchasing at webuysupercars.com, said: ‘We bought the Tesla that Prince Charles had been using for the last few months through a tip off from a contact at Tesla.

‘We visited Windsor Castle to get some photos of the car and to promote the backstory of the its previous usage. We didn’t collect from Prince Charles himself.

‘We did speak to the staff and security personnel there who allowed us to take some photos of the car in the grounds.

‘Of course the previous usage makes the car more interesting and so being allowed to take photos of it at Windsor was important to us.

‘The key element of this in my mind is to highlight the positive move to electric car usage, and maybe make a point that politicians making the policy that’s driving the uptake should be seen to be using them themselves.

‘We’re guessing Prince Charles will get a full electric Range Rover as and when that’s available as that’s the manufacturer they have the strongest association with and of course it’s seen as a British brand and made in Britain.’

Charles was first spotted in the Tesla Model S in February this year when he was visiting his father Prince Philip at the King Edward VII Hospital in London.

The prince has long been a fan of green energy and took delivery of his £60,000 Jaguar I-Pace in 2018.

He also had his gas guzzling convertible 51-year-old Aston Martin DB6 Volante sports car converted in 2008 to run on an alternative bioethanol ‘green’ fuel made from English wine and whey from cheese making.

The high octane blended fuel known as E85 and containing just 15% unleaded petrol is said to actually have improved the performance of the classic car, making it even more powerful.

Prince William and Kate drove the car – decorated with ribbons and balloons - from Buckingham Palace to Clarence House on their wedding day in 2011 after they married in Westminster Abbey.

Charles who has championed environmental concerns for decades reportedly first had a test drive in a Tesla in 2016 on his Scottish estate in Ayrshire.

He was shown around the car by Kimbal Musk, the brother of Tesla chief executive and Silicon Valley magnate Elon Musk, who sits on the board of the American car company.

The Prince was said to have personally hosted Mr Musk and his fiancée over several days at Dumfries House.

Princess Diana was often seen at the wheel of her old Ford Escort which she was given by Charles in May 1981, two months before they married

It became well known when she took it to watch Charles play polo, but she sold it soon after giving birth to Prince William in 1982 and it was later bought for £6,000 by an antiques dealer.

It later belonged to a royal fan for around 20 years, who drove it only sparingly without disclosing its history to her friends.

The car with its original registration, paint and upholstery was bought by a museum in South America in an online auction by Reeman Dansie Auctions, of Colchester, Essex.
