Cyclist, 58, dies three weeks after driver, 36, 'deliberately plowed his truck into group of riders during Arizona bike race, injuring six others'

A cyclist has died after he was struck by an Arizona driver who police say deliberately plowed his pickup truck into a group of people participating in a bike race in June.

The 58-year-old man, identified by loved ones as Jeremy Barrett, succumbed to his injuries on Saturday, Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman Bart Graves said Monday. No other information about the victim was immediately released by officials.

The accused driver, Shawn Chock, 36, was indicted last week on nine counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one count each of fleeing an accident and unlawful flight.

Navajo County Attorney Brad Carlyon said on Monday he is expecting more charges to be filed in the wake of Barrett's death.

'Once we have received all the law enforcement reports we will receive to determine if any new charges are appropriate to bring,' Carlyon said.

AZ Cycling, a non-profit organization, confirmed Barrett's death in a statement on Sunday.

'We are heartbroken to hear Jeremy Barrett, who was severely injured in the Bike the Bluff crash, passed away last night,' read the Facebook post. 'Jeremy was a wonderful mentor and friend in the cycling community. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.'

Barrett's girlfriend, Laura Cedergren, revealed in a earlier post that the man had suffered 'massive internal injuries and broken bones.' 

Kathryn Bertine, a friend in the cycling community, told Arizona Daily Star that after a bleak initial prognosis, Barrett had begun to show signs of improvement, but then he suffered a stroke and his condition took a turn for the worse last week.  

Bertine and another friend described Barrett as kind, knowledgeable and helpful. 

Shawna Glazer, who claimed to have been at the scene of the crash and comforted Barrett before help arrived, wrote in a post that the 58-year-old man was more concerned with the well-being of his fellow riders than with his own condition. 

'What amazes me most about Jeremy is that despite his tremendous injuries and confusion of being hit with a pickup truck, he asked me where his friends were,' she wrote. 'He wanted to know if they were ok and if they were also hit. In that moment he showed me what it truly meant to be selfless. This man's last thoughts and questions were about the wellbeing of others!'

Barrett leaves behind his girlfriend, his elderly mother and two brothers. 

Seven cyclists were injured when Chock sped into a crowd gathered for the annual 58-mile Bike the Buff race on June 19 in Show Low, a mountain city about three hours northeast of Phoenix, authorities said. 

Witnesses described seeing the bodies of cyclists flying left and right.

Chock then hit a telephone pole, and backed out of the crowd as cyclists pounded on the truck´s windows, screaming for him to get out, witnesses said. 

Chock drove down the road, turned around and headed back toward the cyclists before driving away, witnesses said.

Police caught up with him outside a nearby hardware store and shot him. Chock was hospitalized in Flagstaff until his release July 2. He is jailed in Navajo County.

In 2007, he was indicted on aggravated assault. Several months later, he was charged with disorderly conduct with a weapon and pleaded guilty to a reduced charge.

In 2010, three DUI-related charges, including having a third DUI, were dropped as part of an agreement where Chock pleaded guilty to felony aggravated DUI and shoplifting. He also pleaded no contest to aggravated assault.

Records show Chock was given probation in 2012 but violated the conditions of it in May 2013. According to court paperwork, Chock rejected a chance at continuing probation and requested prison time. 

He was sentenced to two years and eight months but got more than 280 days credit for time served before sentencing. Online Arizona Department of Corrections records indicate he went to prison in May 2013 but was paroled in October 2014.

Tony Quinones, a cyclist who saw the crash, said some riders wondered at first whether the driver had fallen asleep at the wheel. But Quinones said he saw the man deliberately accelerate toward the cyclists.

'He went right at us,' Quinones said.

Seven cyclists were rushed to hospitals, six in critical condition.  

Quinones told the New York Times he was riding in the race with other male cyclists aged 55 and over when he spotted the pickup truck driving in the opposite direction in the opposite lane.  

The witness said he believed the incident was a targeted attack. 

'I don't know who the heck this guy is, or what his motive was,' he said. 

'But he intentionally did not go left into a parking lot. 

'He drove his truck directly and intentionally into our group, and you could hear him accelerate until he hit that telephone pole.' 

Quinones said he spotted a fellow cyclist badly injured and bleeding on the road.

The incident unfolded about 7.25am local time on June 19 while people were taking part in the Bike the Bluff charity race in Show Low, near Phoenix

He recalled how just moments before the race started, he had shaken hands with the cyclist.

Another witness said he saw the incident unfold within the first mile and a half of the men's race. 

Mike Godwin, who owns the Cycle Mania bike shop in Show Low with his wife Carol, said cars were allowed to share the road with cyclists in the race.  

Godwin said the tragic incident had left the local cycling community 'solemn and upset' as people tried to piece together what happened.

Investigators have provided no update about the events leading up to the hit-and-run.   

'We don't know the motivation,' city spokeswoman Grace Payne said. 

Graphic photos taken by local outlet WMICentral.com showed the black truck with bullet holes in the driver's side window and part of a mangled bike stuck on the vehicle's grill. 

Cycling gear including shoes, helmets and water bottles littered the blood-stained road.

Bike the Bluff is a 58-mile race to raise money for the Mountain Christian School in Show Low. 

It was the 13th annual event and had attracted 270 participants. 

Sow Low is a town in the White Mountains located about a three-hour drive from Phoenix.  

Multiple law enforcement teams including Show Low Police Department, Navajo County Sheriff's Office and the Arizona Department of Public Safety are seen on the scene investigating
